With the start of the Edwardian jewelry period the Twentieth Century, did not bring with it the expected changes and innovations in social, political and artistic life that many people of this antique period had anticipated.

The influence of the Nineteenth Century stretched right the way through for over a decade; and it was not until the outbreak of the First World War in 1914, and the Russian Revolution some four years later that Europe & America finally put the old century behind them.

Here at Beverley R Jewelry we have a selection of fine Art Nouveau jewelry which is not only of high quality to grace any collection, but also very wearable, and would look just as good with jeans and a light blouse, as with a smart business suit or evening dress.

In the Estate Jewelry of this period the 'garland style' became very popular, and Louis Cartier became its master consulting some of the original 18th Century pattern books to incorporate into his designs.

He also incorporated, laurel wreaths, bows, knots, tassels and lace motifs into his antique jewelry.

Until very recently Queen Victoria was the longest reigning Monarch, for a period over sixty years.

For fashion and antique jewelry most historians brake down her reign into three periods, which all contained their own very distinctive style.

Here we are going to look at the middle period dating from 1860 -1880.

There is indeed something magical about earrings, which is not matched by any other kind of antique or contemporary jewelry.

Especially if they are antique drop earrings, uniquely, they move with a life of their own, voluptuous but pure, cold yet provocative, most men prefer to see a lady wearing antique drop earrings, as opposed to the vintage diamond stud earrings which most women seem to be wearing today.

The design of these estate period earrings were dictated to by the fashions of the time, which had not changed drastically from the latter part of the 19th Century antique period.

The few vintage drop earrings produced were of moderate size and in 'garland' style, commonly mounted with diamonds in a millegrain setting, that is a setting where the gold or platinum goes completely around the gemstone, rather that a prong setting.

The early 1900's pre-war years, they had discovered platinum, a white untarnishable precious metal which was heavy, hard to work and difficult to solder, but of great structural strength so that only a little was required to produce a sturdy mount.

They had always found, and this was in all antique pieces not just vintage earrings, that diamonds looked better in a white metal, as opposed to yellow gold which could detract from the brightness of the diamond; Platinum took over from Silver which had been previously used.

For the purist, antique jewelry has to be over a hundred years old to be regarded as a true antique piece.

Art Deco Jewelry from the 1920' and 30's would have been regarded as Estate or Vintage jewelry, now however in the year 2020 some of the early pieces of Art Deco jewelry can now be truly classed as Antique Jewelry.

The use of gold was also restricted, and those wishing to commission a piece of antique estate jewelry were required to supply if not all, most of the raw material.

Now after 40 years where platinum had reigned as the supreme metal for all estate jewelry designers, yellow gold now became the main feature of the entire antique estate jewelry production of the 1940's.

Also the war greatly restricted all trade, which meant gemstones were in short supply.

Gemstones were taken out of antique jewelry pieces, and diamonds out of antique engagement rings, with the pieces being completely re-designed; and there was a widespread use of synthetic sapphires and rubies.

When Beverley R Jewelry first came into being over thirty years ago the Art Deco period would never have been described as antique jewelry.

Circa 1925   At the end of the First World War, the reaction to four years of hardship, suffering and privation,, took the form of a period of creativity, and 'joie de vivre.'

The motto of this period was - 'Live and forget the past.'

Etiquette changed, so that conformism was rejected and freedom of expression became the new rule.
