The Jharkhand High Court on July 29 , took Suo Motu cognizance of the death of a district Judge in Dhanbad who was mowed down in a road accident on Wednesday when he was out on a morning walk.The Division bench Comprised of Chief Justice Dr. Ravi Ranjan and Justice Sujit Narayan Prasad on the basis of the letter by the Principal District and Sessions Judge, Dhanbad regarding sad and unfortunate demise of Uttam Anand and the CCTV footage called upon the Advocate General of the State, Director General of Police, Jharkhand, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Dhanbad and Superintendent of Police (City), Dhanbad and Rajiv Sinha, learned Additional Solicitor General of India.

The Supreme Court on July 23, 2021, dismissed an appeal challenging the order passed by the National Green Tribunal (NGT) banning the sale of firecrackers during Covid-19 in all cities and towns across the country with poor air quality index (AQI).Senior Advocate PS Narasimha, who appeared for firecracker sellers/dealers, informed the bench of Justices AM Khanwilkar and Sanjiv Khanna that a total ban had been imposed on firecrackers during Covid-19.

The Court clarified that the ban was in place only in places where air quality was poor and the ban was only on sales and not on manufacture.

“Whatever can be controlled should be controlled,” said the Court.Read More....

The Karnataka High Court has rejected a notice issued by the Uttar Pradesh police to Twitter India MD Manish Maheshwari, seeking his personal presence in a communal sensitive case, stating that it was issued with a ‘malafide’ intent.The Single-Judge Bench of Justice G Narender, however, allowed the police to record his statement via virtual mode or by visiting his office or residence.

The Union cabinet on July 14 approved the continuation of the Centrally Sponsored Scheme (CSS) for the development of infrastructure facilities for the judiciary for a further period of five years from April 1, 2021, to March 31, 2026.The government’s share of the total cost of Rs 9,000 crore on the scheme will be Rs 5,357 crore, including Rs 50 crore for the implementation through the Gram Nyayalaya scheme and a national mission for justice and legal reform.

The scheme will help in the construction of 3,800 court halls and 4,000 residential units (both new and ongoing projects) for judicial officers of district and subordinate courts, 1,450 lawyer halls, 1,450 toilet complexes and 3,800 digital computer rooms.Read More...

The Union government has knocked on the Supreme Court doors, asking it to allow the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) time till September, for the framing of uniform guidelines for payment of ex-gratia assistance to families of those who succumbed to COVID-19.Earlier on June 30, the apex court had given NDMA six weeks to submit the guidelines.The government said ‘accelerated’ formulation of guidelines would lead to “undesirable results”.

The court said work on the recommendations was at an advanced stage.The top court of the country had earlier flayed the NDMA, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, for failing to perform its duty.Read More...
