Due to recent news about the change to abortion laws in Texas, I think we should think about bereavement in obstetrics in relation to abortion. For some, contraception fails and they choose abortion because pregnancy was something that they never wanted to happen. If someone is desperate for an abortion, they will find a way – and often it will be higher risk than visiting an abortion clinic. I think it’s extremely important that anybody who has experienced a bereavement in obstetrics, including an abortion, to receive emotional support. I think that regardless of the fact that abortion is a choice, it still can and should be seen as bereavement in obstetrics, because there is still a huge amount of emotional and physical change that follows.

Our anxiety disorder programme, “Extreme Anxiety: Winning the Battle”, features interviews with patients who have severe anxiety. A very commonly used therapy would be cognitive behavioural therapy. Counselling or other therapies may also be recommended, depending on how the anxiety affects the person. Those with severe anxiety may be prescribed benzodiazepines, to be used when they are extremely anxious. Our anxiety disorder programme, “Extreme Anxiety: Winning the Battle”, and others are available on our website.

What is bereavement in obstetrics? Bereavement in obstetrics is a heart-breaking and life-changing thing to go through – so why do so few people share their experiences? A bereavement in obstetrics can be different in many ways, depending on the parents’ journey. I write, ‘failed’, because those who experience miscarriage after miscarriage may have feelings of failure – even though it is not their fault. However, this means that a lot of people experience miscarriages and have nobody to talk to about it, because nobody knew about it in the first place.

Stigma towards psychotropic medication may lead some to believe that not a lot of thought goes into the medication somebody may be prescribed for their mental health problems, when in fact a lot of knowledge is required to be able to prescribe medications like this.Myths About Psychopharmacology TreatmentWe have all heard somebody say something anti-medication, and more likely relating to psychopharmacology than other kinds of medication or treatment.

This also comes with the idea that newer generations are ‘snowflakes’, when previous generations suffered in silence.Side EffectsWhile some who badmouth psychopharmacology treatment may misunderstand the issues, others might rave about side effects.

Anybody claiming a medication could not have side effects is lying — we’ve all seen the leaflets in the paracetamol packets that we may pick up regularly at the supermarket.

When somebody is prescribed an SSRI (serotonin sensitive reuptake inhibitor, a modern anti-depressant), the side effects can be very obvious in the beginning, similar to a mild flu.

This should goes away after a couple of weeks.

However, there are more serious side effects, for example, suicidal thoughts.

What is an eating disorder? - Binge Eating Disorder – Regularly eating large amounts of food until past full, and struggling to control this behaviour. Alongside this, blood tests should also be taken to ensure that there are no health problems as a result of the eating disorder behaviours. Someone struggling with an eating disorder may also be referred to a self-help support group. It reinforces the idea that somebody can’t have an eating disorder unless they are underweight, which is not true at all.

For many (if not all) soldiers, war is a very traumatic experience, so it’s unsurprising that they may develop PTSD. However, you don’t have to be a soldier to develop post traumatic stress disorder. Those with post traumatic stress disorder may struggle with recurring nightmares about the event, distressing flashbacks, disturbing thoughts, emotional detachment, dissociation, emotional dysregulation (struggling to control emotions), hyperarousal (irritability, anxiety etc), and hypervigilance (always looking out for danger). In the first stage, as most would expect, a patient history is taken and a treatment plan is decided on. Overall, studies have shown that EMDR is a very effective post traumatic stress disorder treatment, and it is faster-acting than other psychological talking therapies available.
