I spent some time hopping about a few websites to see what kind of prices I could find and also for some comparisons with days gone by.

Because everyone seems to fondly remember those good old days when penny sweets actually cost a penny and you had change left over from a fiver if you bought a fish and chip supper - but how cheap was a hotel back in the day?

Life has changed so much and we are all so much richer in our day to day lives - but this is not an economics paper so I'll push on anyway!

Back in the day Shelling out for a sea-view pad in 1957 at the Conniston Hotel in Torquay got you a room with shared bathrooms and cost a healthy £139.86 a week in today's money (£9.45 in 1957).

Now the Conniston Hotel I am sure provided a fantastic holiday base for all who stayed and offered great value at the time, but when you fast forward to 2009 and see that you can now book a well appointed three star hotel abroad for less than a pound per night you start to see what cheap means in today's terms!

If you were to read that you could stay in real comfort in Marmaris, Turkey for just 64p a night, would you believe it?
