The septic system is small in size and it functions as the on-site disposal and treatment system which remains buried in the ground. When household waste gains entry to the septic tank, then several things take place: 1.Organic solid material floats to the surface and produces a layer of what is generally known as “scum.” Bacteria in the septic tank transform this material to liquid in a biological manner. The byproducts of bacterial digestion and inert solid materials descend to the bottom of the tank and produce a layer generally known as “sludge.” 3. The clear water thatexists between the scum and sludge layers then overflows into the area of soil absorption. Cesspools (or leaching pools) are pits into which concrete, cement or brick block walls have been stationed. It can be utilized for the temporary storage and collection of excreta, feces, or fecal sludge as part of an on-site system of sanitation and has some resemblance with septic tanks or with soak pits.
