At Nextt, we aim to help all our participants take steps towards living happy, independent lives to the best of their abilities.
For many adults with disability, independent living is a great step towards achieving that – and disability housing, facilitated by disability services NSW, is a great stepping stone towards that.Disability housing holds a lot of mystery, so let’s take a look at four things you probably didn’t know about disability housing in Australia. There are many different types of disability housingThere is a lot of mystery around what disability housing is, and how it works.
Let’s clear that up: there are three main types of disability housing, which are supported by disability services in NSW.Shared living: Shared living is disability housing where you move into a new home and live with other people,Independent living: Independent living is another great way to achieve independency – it’s ideal for Nextt participants who live independently in their own homes, but with a little extra support. In home respite: In home respite gives Nextt participants the opportunity to stay at home alone, with staff coming and staying with them for short periods of time.Shared living in disability housing is a chance to develop new skillsLiving in shared living in disability housing is a great opportunity for our Nextt participants.
It gives them the chance to develop new skills, whilst continuing to expand their current skills through their capacity building programs.Responsibility and other life skills are especially developed through this opportunity: living in a new environment without the help of family and friends gives them a chance to do their own grocery shopping, cook and clean for themselves, and learn about maintaining both personal care and a clean home. These skills, developed through disability services NSW, are highly beneficial for all participants.Nextt considers who will live well together in shared disability housingNot everyone works well together, which is why, when moving participants into shared disability housing, disability services NSW consider who will be happy to live together and who won’t.
We pay attention to factors like common goals and common interests – because if those are shared, Nexttbelieves participants will not only live well together, but also be able to help each other develop their skills and meet those goals. We support participants to achieve independent livingMoving out of home is a big deal for everyone – but you can rest assured that even though people with disability are taking a big step towards independence, they won’t be alone.
We support our participants through the journey: regularly visiting, assisting them with maintaining their established routines, and helping them maintain structure in their lives.Disability services NSW aim to help people with disability enrich their lives and achieve happiness, not leave them worse off than before! For more information on disability housing for you or your loved one, or for any of our services, contact the Nextt team today!
