I thought I was going to be a lawyer but fell in love with the corporate business world instead.

Five years ago, many of the video streaming and conferencing platforms that have powered us through the Covid-19 pandemic were still small startups or just digital scaffolds on a programmer’s laptop.

We all had to move swiftly to keep afloat.

Over nine months and counting of improvisation, effective leaders have found creative ways to deliver on the organizational mission, keep the team connected despite distance and continue to “put food on the table” through old and new revenue streams.

Many of us were instrumental in making it work and are still creating and executing great initiatives as we press forward.

If you’re among the resilient leaders who are still effectively plowing through this mess, then give yourself a pat on the back.

With shipments of vaccines on the move and the promise of a spring thaw after a cold winter of loss in the forecast, we can all begin to say that once forbidden phrase, “a return to normalcy.” The problem?

If we’re unlucky, it arrives abruptly, shaking up our teams and forcing us to make important decisions quickly.

It’s the impact to the team and business when retirements, rivals, layoffs, and economic headwinds take some of our most talented team members.

Today, thanks to the pandemic and its economic fallout, the cliff is upon us once more.

Even the strongest businesses among us are going to lose talented people in the coming months due to shrinking revenue, unplanned leaves, competitive offers as companies rebuild, and, unfortunately, the virus itself.

For starters, be prepared to give your team the time and space it needs to grieve the losses.

Inevitably, this cliff will mean untimely goodbyes to some great team members.

They pulled the edifice down anyway, right after hearing the first public reading of the US Declaration of Independence.Nestled amid high-minded language that affirmed the inalienable rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness was a list of 27 grievances against the crown.

Near the end of the Declaration came the most incendiary statement of all: “These United Colonies are, and of Right out to be, free and Independent states.” The citizens of New York downed the statue as a declaration of their own freedom from tyranny.Freedom is a word we tend to toss around to suit our desire at a given moment… At its best, freedom is understood as the ability to speak, act, move, and think as we will without outside restraint or hindrance.

In the worst light, we reduce freedom to a free pass… A license to do whatever we choose to do without concern for its potential impact on the neighbor, the stranger, the family, the community.

In this surreal year of 2020, we continue to see both expressions of freedom, most notably in the burgeoning Black Lives Matter movement and our continued reckoning with the advance of Covid-19.

Must Be This Tall to RideThrill seekers can remember every rollercoaster they’ve boarded since childhood.

The adrenaline rush that follows every bank, barrel roll, and bunny hop (coaster speak for hills), leaves an impression about the ride’s intensity.

Many can also recall the time(s) they were turned away from a coaster because of height restrictions.

Yeah, that’s the underbelly of the rollercoaster world.

If you’re in this predicament, you have a choice to make: find an alternative, more suitable “ride” if fit is the issue, or help the struggling employ grow into their seat in the office space, or, in some instances, you just need to end the ride altogether.Having the Tough ConversationsEffective leaders understand that praise is delivered in public and constructive feedback is given in private.

The former is easy, while the latter can be excruciatingly painful but necessary – I call this “Radical Candor” (Kim Scott wrote a book on it, although a practice I had adopted long before the book and one I’ve practiced in ALL facets of my life).

Have you ever felt influenced by the failures or fears of others around you?

If yes, you need to pause and reflect and learn how to detach yourself from the negativity around you and operate in this philosophy or mindset that I have of “No Excuses”.We often give advice to others to just “let go” of the things that bring them down, but are we able to take our own advice?

Likely, the majority of us will fake it and “yes” to maintain our pride and appearance to others.

We need to start from scratch and knit our thought processes together carefully so that our thoughts and our actions align with this guidance.

Understand the patternTo detach yourself from the toxicity, you need first to understand the existing patterns and cycle of building negative thoughts.

As you learn to identify these patterns, you can focus on wrestling down the negative thoughts.

While comfort and relaxation have long been associated with the general features of warmth and heat, heat treatment goes a step further. It can offer both pain relief and therapeutic effects for multiple forms of lower back pain.In comparison, a heating pad for back pain is both affordable and straightforward to use with lower back discomfort – in the form of heating pads, heat wraps, ice pools, soft gel bags, etc.In your back, muscle spasms, joint pain, and discomfort will restrict movement and interfere with physical exercise.

Heat treatment also helps with back pain, while treatment may help block out inflammation. This form of treatment isn’t new at all.

The Chinese and Japanese are also going to use hot springs as pain relief.Benefits of Heating Pad for Back Pain-Heat treatment is an essential cure for back pain as it improves airflow, enabling joints and muscles to travel with nutrients and oxygen. This circulation helps heal muscles that are weakened, relieves pain, and increases the back’s stiffness.Any treatment with heat will help alleviate back pain.

Yet, since they’re convenient and lightweight, heating pads are perfect. They’re electric as well, meaning you can use them anywhere in your house, such as sitting on the sofa or lying in bed.Hot or hot baths offer wet heat, which stimulates circulation and decreases discomfort and tension in the muscles.

If you have pain or weakness in other areas of your body, too, a bath may work well. The issue with baths, however, is that keeping the temperature of the water is hard.

Although heating devices and heating pads are highly effective in dealing with a wide variety of aches, the most popular are the following:Pressure in the musclesCramps of MusclesInjuries of musclesInjuries of tissuesJoints AchingCramps for menstruationRecovery from post-surgeryTo handle or control the above conditions, various heating pads are used, and all of them function similarly.

Say Goodbye to New Year’s Resolutions! Now, just over a week into the new year, I am seeing a sweeping tide of New Year’s resolutions posted online, an avalanche of goals, plans, and good intentions.

Making those resolutions has been a societal norm for eons, dating all the way back to ancient Babylon some 4,000 years ago.

Of course, the Babylonians avowals were much different than the ones we make to ourselves today.

Their goals were more about honoring their gods and their king, whereas today, we’re all about personal enrichment.

But one thing is certain—modern man is decidedly not.

What’s more, dumping those expectations on our shoulders all at once further lessens our chances of success.

Mobs on the steps of the US Capitol.

Supply chain troubles…One unsavory accolade we can now award to 2020 is the title “The Year of Lost Trust.” In a year we looked to our institutions to keep us well, keep us together, and keep us moving forward, many of them mustered no plan or couldn’t execute the one(s) they crafted.

The people our organizations and institutions serve daily no longer trust that we can deliver on our mission or promises.

The people I trust in my personal and professional life are those who model honest behaviour and have the courage to admit their mistakes when they’ve made the mistakes.

If the answer doesn’t come easily, perhaps it’s time to reflect, look at one’s self in them mirror and then revisit the practices that build trust and keep cynicism at bay.Back in 2014, The University of Bath School of Management (England) conducted a study that looked at trust cultivation in businesses.

Able leaders, those who show a high level of competence in executing, evaluating, and tweaking organizational mission, garner trust.

Unable to find a historical frame-of-reference from my lifetime that compares to the domestic angst of late-Spring 2020, I’ve reached back to the experiences of my parents’ generation in search of context, commentary, and clarity about a path forward.

Understanding of the currents that led to the brutal death of George Floyd; understanding of the pain carried by those engaged in protests and those tasked with public safety; understanding of the impulses that move people to violence; understanding of the systems that perpetuate racism; understanding of what I can do as a privileged white woman working in corporate leadership.Growing up in small town Western Canada, I had little formative experience with the beauty of diversity, because there was little of it in my town.

While I developed friendships with a few black peers, connections forged around class discussions and athletic contests, and stole a few hallway kisses with a black classmate, the connections were not especially deep.

It wasn’t until years later, moving to Toronto – a richly diverse city, that I had these experiences – that I met one of my best friends – a fiercely strong black woman, adopting her mother as my own and we now call one another “sis”.

For me, intention begins with listening; listening to the painful stories told by my black sisters and brothers and engaging history with fresh eyes.

And those of you who know me especially well recognize that I tend to be vocal when people are wronged by institutions and individuals – I am a staunch advocate of “doing the right thing”.

Including mild to moderate discomfort to the extreme, chronic pain, back injuries are as varied as the persons that have them, and back support requires to be similarly diverse because of this.Statistics demonstrate that back pain impacts millions of people per year, but an important approach to reducing pain and stress is to provide sufficient care for the spine.Back braces provide the spinal column with added stability, recouping the pain and irritation of any exercise and helping to treat and recover from a wide range of injuries or disorders. Before wearing a back brace, consulting with a doctor is suggested.

The assessment of a specialist will help decide whether a brace, as well as the type of brace required and how it can be worn, is likely to be helpful. It is important to note that there are several types of back braces, and these are recommended as one component of a holistic recovery package and that more injury and additional pain can be caused by wearing a brace on its own and wearing a brace not according to the advice of a doctor.HOW TO CHOOSE A BACK BRACEWhen considering a back brace, the most important fact to notice is where you want to focus the reinforcement, be it your lower, middle, upper back, shoulders, or a mixture of these regions. There seems to be a range of styles and fabrics available for you to select from, in addition to the particular location of the back that requires support. For certain circumstances and also just for certain people’s bodies, different types, formats, and materials can be safer, so it is necessary to contact a physician whenever possible to find the best back brace for you. However, depending on the components they are made of, most back braces can be broken into one of three groups.

These are versatile, semi-rigid, and stiff.DIFFERENT TYPES OF BACK BRACES YOU MUST KNOW ABOUT-1) CompressionA simple back support wrap, strengthening and avoiding spinal fatigue, helps compress and support low-back injuries.

This kind of brace can be worn without constraint during exercise, shielding the back and abdominal wall. For someone with constant back pain, muscle fatigue, and strains, this is perfect.

This brace is considered among the best lower back pain relief products for people facing severe back pain.

2) Posture SupportBoth signs of bad posture include hunched shoulders, curved back, or forward-leaning neck which can result in other injuries.

Open the Damn MailAs the US Postal Service wrestles with solvency and relevance, a more urgent problem is unfolding in the bowels of servers, the caches of laptops & cell phones, along with the recesses of the nebulous “Cloud.” While the affliction doesn’t have an official name at this point, we know its symptoms: Unopened and unreturned emails.

What are the long-term implications of all this bad communication etiquette?

It begins with the acknowledgement that digital communication, the modus operandi of commerce in 2020, is only effective if end users follow through when the mail hits the inbox. One of my pet peeves in the work world rises from employees and colleagues who don’t practice effective email etiquette.

While communication channels for instant real time dialogue, engagement and collaboration are on the rise and highly effective for many types of communication, email is still critical.

Many may claim that the demands of the job and the volume of communications that arrive impede timely responses and action, I remind them that a breakdown in timely follow through today will lead to greater erosion of productivity, trust, and rapport tomorrow.

We must do better.Set and Manage ExpectationsWhether I receive an email from a client, colleague, or even a vendor, they can expect an initial response within a matter of hours and most certainly within one business day.
