What if instant noodles were made this way!Known as the broke college students’ main source of food, instant noodles have been satisfying the hungry bellies of the economically-unstable or culinarily-challenged for decades.

It starts with noodle-making, followed by steaming, seasoning and finally dehydrating the noodles in oil heat.

It was a concept first explored by French physiologist François Magendie, who conducted an (ethically questionable) experiment in which he fed a 3 year-old dog only sugar and recorded his findings— it died in 32 days.Although our diets are (hopefully) not as extreme as Magendie’s test animals’, we, especially children, still consume a notably high amount of empty calories— with the majority of it coming from added sugars, solid fats, processed oils and starch.

During the refining process, the most nutritious parts of whole grains, like bran and germ, are removed— stripping the flour of most of its natural nutrients including: fibre, vitamins, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, and more.Nevertheless, there is one thing maida doesn’t lack in— carbohydrates.

This consequently causes more energy to be converted into fat tissues instead of it being used to fuel other parts of the body.

So much so that it has led to the imminent extinction of rhinos, elephants, Tigers, and more— whose habitats have been destroyed.

Soluble fibre can dissolve in water and helps to regulate blood cholesterol and glucose levels.

As it dissolves, soluble fibre transforms into a gel-like substance that assists our digestion in many ways.

Moreover, soluble fibre-rich foods are consumed by the healthy gut bacteria in our large intestine, aiding it in regulating our appetite and metabolism.

Let’s start at the beginning though, with the nut, and the farming. The Bambara groundnut is the neglected little cousin to the mighty peanut.

It is an extremely hardy grain legume that has traditionally played an important role for small farmers who work the semi-arid lands of Western Africa.

With the progressive desertification of sub-Saharan regions, the groundnut has piqued the interest of the international research community for a long list of great reasons. The Bambara groundnut is drought-tolerant, can handle degraded soil, is a nitrogen fixer, which means it can actually revitalise soils, and its cultivation does not require pesticides or fertilizers.

It really is a top notch super crop that possesses traits that modern staples like wheat, rice and maize often lack (and that are compensated for by the extensive use of fertilisers, pesticides and irrigation systems).

WhatIF Foods’ CEO, Christoph Langwallner, was driven by the challenge to solve the Nutritional Paradox: people becoming obese on one side of the planet while the other side goes hungry and is starved of essential nutrients.

Basically, they are the Vantablack yin to the bright white yang of the Bambara groundnut. So the missing link is literally a missing link: the supply chain.

Over the past few months, we’ve learnt that conventional methods of food production, distribution and consumption can be improved in terms of sustainability and food waste management.

The Covid-19 pandemic has not only disrupted lives and livelihoods, but also magnified these issues.

WhatIF Foods has launched a range of products that aim to support sustainable agricultural practices, healthier diets and fairer incomes for farming communities. The world is facing a paradoxical issue with food – many people are becoming overweight and obese, yet millions are going hungry or are deficient of essential nutrients.

Most of the food products available to us are calorie-rich, but poor in nutritional quality.

And we’re ruining our planet with unsustainable agricultural practices that are leaving farming communities behind. As a disruptive food brand, WhatIF Foods looks at the food system and asks themselves, ‘What if we could change things?’ Guided by their mission to achieve nutritional security while supporting farming communities, the company is addressing the food system holistically by providing sustainable, nutritious and tasty foods in a convenient way.

They are reimagining convenience food, blending food science with ground-breaking technology to improve everyday products we know and love – like noodles, shakes and soups. The products feature Future Fit Crops, such as the Bambara groundnut and Moringa, that can grow in poor soil and withstand dry and volatile climates predicted for the future.

This is good news for smallholder farmers who can now grow Future Fit Crops on marginalised or degraded land, thereby opening themselves up to new income opportunities.

In parallel to being climate-resilient, Future Fit Crops are also rich in micro-nutrients with a balanced macro-nutrient profile.

Unlike normal instant noodles, WhatIF Noodles are made with Bambara groundnuts, a more sustainable crop that is said to be able to regenerate both the consumer and planet.“What we deliver in BamNut noodles not only nourishes our bodies with nutrients, but it is also made with regenerative crops that nourish the soil in which it is grown.

We are also empowering farmers by ensuring them a fair share of profits from climate change-resilient crops.

At the same time, we are delivering to consumers a delicious product that is healthy for them” – Christoph Langwallner, CEO WhatIF FoodsAt Lifestyle Collective, we are all for supporting and giving a voice to brands that are doing their part for the environment, so the first thing we did was get ourselves a BanNut NoodBox to give these noodles a try.

First off, let us say that these are not your usual run of the mill instant noodles that we are all used to.

For a start, it comes packaged in a paper box that can be recycled, and in flavours that you would never expect an instant noodle to come in.We tried the BamNut NoodBox which had all four variants.

While the noodles do come wrapped in plastic, the amount of plastic used is much less than your average packet of instant noodles, and the brand did mention that they are looking for other alternatives for the future.
