It's fair to say that Hollywood freaked out when Netflix hinted at the possibility of watching TV and movies at 1.5x speed. It would take binging a show to a whole new level.News surfaced on Monday about Netflix's tests, and now the streaming service has responded to all the brouhaha.Keela Robison, Netflix's vice president, wrote in a blog post on Monday that the 1.5x speed test is for mobile and tablet users only -- it won't affect TVs.You can stick to normal speed, slow it down (0.5X or 0.75X) or speed it up (1.25X and 1.5X), a feature that Robison pointed out has been on DVD players for quite a while. In addition, the speed settings aren't all that's being tested this month.

For something intended to be hidden out of sight, the NVIDIA SHIELD TV (2019) sure is a funny shape. Then again, after four years solidifying its reputation as the go-to Android TV box, perhaps NVIDIA’s brand new SHIELD TV is allowed to step outside the lines a little. One thing’s for sure: with a new AI-powered upscaler, lower sticker price, and brand new remote, there’s more to this 2019 model than just a fresh shape. While the SHIELD TV Pro, which launches alongside this model, looks much like its predecessor, NVIDIA had different goals for its mass-market version.Misplace it behind the coach cushions and you can make it ring, Tile-style, either from the SHIELD TV app for iOS and Android, or by pressing a button on the SHIELD TV itself. Finally, there’s a new Settings key, which can be programmed to launch the app of your choice or to trigger things like mute, taking a screenshot, or open the recent apps or all apps views.

It’s usually at least mildly newsworthy when a large or particularly hot company cuts a chunk of its workforce, as UiPath did this week when it cut about 400 jobs from its total of about 3,200.But the timing and optics of this particular round of cuts from this particular company was jarring, especially with the WeWork debacle still fresh on people’s minds. The company added ProcessGold and StepShot to its stable earlier this month, after a $568 million funding round earlier this year pushed its total funding to over a billion dollars and a $7 billion valuation. And then came the job cuts. The timing and price tag of the event makes for poor optics (even though $8 million wouldn’t pay 400 people for more than a few months), but on its face it’s also rather alarming that a company freshly flush with gobs of cash would need to make cuts of any kind, let alone to a chunk of its workforce.Shouldn’t UiPath be on a breathless hiring spree right now?

NEWPORT NEWS, VA - While particle accelerators may be on the cutting edge of science, the building and preparation of some particle accelerator components has long been more of an art form, dependent on recipes born of trial and error.A staff scientist at the Department of Energy's Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility, Palczewski has been awarded a DOE Early Career Research Program grant to put the science back into particle accelerator preparation.Particle accelerators are go-to machines for researchers who want to understand the tiniest bits of matter or analyze the X-ray structure of complex molecules, for companies looking to sanitize medical devices and for scanning cargo at our nation's borders. When it comes to building better components for superconducting radiofrequency, or SRF, accelerators, such as Jefferson Lab's own CEBAF, traditional wisdom has held that the most efficient components are made of the purest niobium metal. That wisdom was turned on its head in 2012, when two Jefferson Lab staff scientists unintentionally implanted atoms of titanium into the walls of niobium accelerator components with surprising results."Gianluigi Ciovati and Pashupati Dhakal discovered titanium doping when they accidentally implanted titanium in a specific way into the niobium, which made the niobium component much more efficient at accelerating particles."

If you’ve been living in this tech world for quite some time, you’ll know that Windows Phone was Microsoft’s bet to bring its popular Desktop platform to the mobile segment. It was the company’s response to compete with Google and Apple software counterparts.Windows Phone had a very unusual interface made by tiles and the old Metro interface. The company put some effort in trying to make their OS successful, but it failed to compete with Android and iOS.Windows Phone didn’t require much of the hardware to deliver a proper experience. Also, it had an interesting and cool interface, but in the end, it lacked some key applications.

It might be slightly unusual to have one of the worlds’ automotive giants presenting at a broadband conference, but despite the odd fit, there were some very interesting points made.Speaking to Telecoms.com on the side-lines of Broadband World Forum at Amsterdam, Renault’s Chief Sales and Marketing Officers for the services unit Benoit Joly, gave a statement which will come as a tsunami of relief to the telco industry; the battle for control of the connected car ecosystem has not been decided yet. When a new segment of the digital economy emerges, can the telcos move quick enough to capitalise on the newly created revenues?A perfect example of this is in the living room. However, progress was too slow, and now it looks like the OTTs own this space through their smart speakers. In this instance, aside from a few rare examples around the world, the telcos have been relegated to commoditised connectivity providers.

Look out crossover craze because Audi is betting customers may want to slide into something slightly more traditional -- a wagon. The A6 Allroad's return follows confirmation that the US will get the A6 model's range-topping go-fast model, the RS6 Avant.Overall, it's not super surprising the A6 Allroad wagon will follow the RS6 Avant since the former has already been confirmed and on sale in Canada since this summer.Nevertheless, another wagon option is never a bad thing for those sickened by a sea of crossovers and SUVs.As the "Allroad" name has always implied, the company's Quattro all-wheel drive system is standard equipment and the wagon sits 1.8 inches higher than a standard A6 sedan, when configured for its max height setting via selectable modes.Total ground clearance is 7.3 inches at the max setting.

Light pollution is an environmental issue that you might not think much about, but it can have serious consequences. From interfering with astronomical research to impacting both wildlife and human well-being, too much artificial light at night can cause a range of problems. To understand the scale of the problem, the European Space Agency (ESA) is promoting a program to catalog images of cities taken from space and is asking for the public’s help. The Lost at Night project aims to quantify and map artificial light pollution caused by humans, especially around major cities. It uses high definition photographs of the Earth taken from the International Space Station (ISS).“The International Space Station is the best observation point humankind has for monitoring Earth at night,” Kevin Gaston, project leader of Lost at Night, explained to the ESA.

Last week, the BBC officially unveiled plans for one of its most intriguing attempts to restore part of Doctor Who’s missing episode back catalogue to life: the premiere of a fan-led remake, made with its official backing, of the missing 1965 episode “Mission to the Unknown.” Now, you can watch the entire thing.Broadcast on YouTube to be timed down to the minute the original episode would’ve aired in the UK 54 years ago today, the remake – spearheaded by students and teachers at the University of Central Lancashire – is a shot-for-shot recreation of “Mission to the Unknown,” not just the only standalone story in classic Doctor Who history, but one of the 97 episodes from the 1960s era of the show still absent from the BBC’s archives. It’s a precursor to the 12-episode serial “The Daleks’ Master Plan,” most of which is also lost to the BBC’s old policy of archive junking; just three of its episodes remain in the vaults today.“Mission” follows the story of Space Security Agent Marc Cory. After crash landing, Cory has to brave killer Varga plants and deadly Dalek patrols on the planet Kembel in an attempt to warn Earth that the Daleks are planning their most malicious plan yet: unifying the villainous tyrants of seven galaxies in a plot to conquer the entire universe, starting with the eradication of Earth. It doesn’t star William Hartnell’s Doctor, or any of the show’s primary cast.

A pair of 2,000-year-old Roman scrolls believed to have belonged to the family of Julius Caesar, and that were buried and charred during Vesuvius' eruption, have been virtually "unwrapped" for the first time ever. The scrolls, known as the Herculaneum Scrolls, are too fragile to be handled by hand, so researchers needed to use the X-ray beam at Diamond Light Source, as well as a "virtual unwrapping" software to detect the carbon ink on them.“Texts from the ancient world are rare and precious, and they simply cannot be revealed through any other known process," University of Kentucky professor Brent Seales, who led the research team, said in a statement."The scan session at Diamond Light Source promises to be a key moment in our quest for a reliable pathway to reading the invisible library.”ANCIENT ROMAN MINE WITH 'SOME OF THE WORLD'S RICHEST MINERAL DEPOSITS IN THE WORLD' DISCOVERED IN ENGLANDAfter they were buried by the Vesuvius eruption in 79 A.D., they were discovered in 1752 "in an ancient Roman villa near the Bay of Naples," the statement added.

Like it or not, electric cars are the future.Individually, they produce no emissions, have dramatically fewer moving parts than internal-combustion-powered vehicles, making them more reliable and easier to repair, and they deliver instant torque for a satisfying driving experience.Even though battery technology still isn't quite where it needs to be for many motorists, EVs continue to slowly gain in popularity. And as they increase in number on roadways around the world, so does the risk of collision. And what happens when an electric vehicle is involved in a crash?Their colossal, high-voltage battery packs can catch on fire or, potentially even more seriously than that, their severed cables can contact metallic portions of the vehicle's structure, electrocuting occupants or first responders.

Dummy Lightning cables that allow an attacker to gain remote control of computers they’re plugged into are slated to hit mass production, per a Wednesday report in Motherboard.Mike Grover, who goes by the pseudonym MG, designed the “O.MG cable” to look and function exactly like a legitimate Lightning cable made by Apple – but they are modified with hardware (including a very tiny wireless access point) that allows a hacker to remotely run various scripts and commands and hijack a targeted device.MG advertised and sold the cable earlier this year at the DEF CON security conference in August 2019 for $200, telling Motherboard they had to be painstakingly crafted by hand in his kitchen. At the time, Motherboard found that the only hint was that a connected iPod produced a pop-up asking the user to verify they trusted this computer, a par for the course prompt that could easily be overlooked. In fact, security company Hak5 already has a page set up to order the cables when they hit the market, billing it as the “result of months of work that has resulted in a highly covert malicious USB cable.”I will be dropping OMGCables over the next few days of defcon.

Pandora redesigned its app Tuesday to better showcase how it's evolved beyond the radio-like streaming-music service it started out as more than a decade ago.The latest update adds more ways to tweak the kind of song Pandora plays next and introduces a main discovery feed that personalizes recommendations throughout the day, while it also highlights more formats like podcasts and SiriusXM content. As before, people who subscribe to Pandora's $10-a-month Premium tier can access all features and content. The new app also makes it easier for people who aren't Premium subscribers to access playlists and other exclusive content behind the paywall by surfacing the Premium Access option strategically, which lets you watch an ad to unlock a temporary Premium session.Pandora was one of the pioneers of music streaming, and that early track record shaped its identity for years. Its digital version of radio conformed to the rigid licensing rules and an adversarial music industry at the time.

Rapyd, a London-based company developing an all-in-one payments platform, today announced that it’s raised $100 million in financing at a valuation approaching $1 billion, bringing the firm’s total venture capital haul to over $150 million.Oak HC/FT led this latest raise, which followed only months after a $40 million series B raise and saw participation from Tiger Global, Coatue, General Catalyst, Target Global, Stripe, and Entrée Capital.CEO Arik Shtilman said the capital infusion will accelerate the buildout of Rapyd’s network and its cloud-based financial services tools. He added that already, the local and cross-border businesses that rely on Rapyd’s local payment processing reach more than four billion consumers.“Global commerce is at a critical inflection point as businesses are pressed to launch new applications, process and accept local payment methods, disburse funds, and manage risk and compliance so they can offer highly localized customer experiences without having to build their own infrastructure,” said Shtilman, who cofounded Rapyd in 2016.As more than half of all transactions worldwide are facilitated via bank transfers and cash, merchants find it increasingly difficult to digitally enable local payment methods and process cross-border sales that are required for international expansion.”

The long-rumored Motorola Razr reboot — which supposedly will feature a foldable display on the interior of the device — was supposed to land this past summer. However, summer came and went without a peep from Motorola. Now, according to a scoop from CNET, it appears the phone is still on the way and could land before the year closes out.Unlike the other notable foldable devices this year — specifically the Samsung Galaxy Fold and the Huawei Mate X — the Motorola Razr is expected to be more of a mid-range device.Although it likely will be pretty expensive simply due to the foldable display (rumors suggest a $1,500 price tag), its specs could be of a much lower-grade as compared to the Galaxy Fold and the Mate X.However, Motorola has a bit of a hill to climb when it comes to releasing a foldable device.
