Shutterstock / majeczkaRenewable energy had another awesome year. The amount of power that countries can produce using renewables jumped nearly 9 percent worldwide last year. The world s solar capacity has been growing steadily for a decade, and last year saw the biggest leap in new solar capacity ever, as this graph from REN21 shows:Renewables 2016 Global Status Report, REN21While European countries, like Germany and France, continue to generate a large share of the world s solar power last year, China, the U.S. and Japan led the world in new solar projects.China had a particularly strong year, adding over 15 gigawatts of solar capacity, vaulting the country past the U.S. as the world s leading producer of solar power. The country is now capable of generating roughly double what the second-biggest wind producer, the U.S., is able to churn out.It clearly shows that the costs have come down so much that the emerging economies are now really focussing on renewables, Christine Lins, executive secretary of REN21, told the BBC.

Despite YouTube's offer to let people pay for the option of not having ads, most people would rather watch ads than pay.But Google wants to reward some of those people who have signed up for the service.Users that have signed up for YouTube Red have been getting emails from the company, letting them know that they appreciate their subscription. The emails are letting the users know that they can claim a free Chromecast, for being a loyal subscriber. It appears that a lot of people are getting these emails, though it's hard to say if everyone is getting one. There doesn't seem to be any difference between users that have been around since the beginning, and those that only signed up recently, as people from both groups have gotten the email.

Parkkipaikkojen reunaviivat on maalattu vaaleanpunaisiksi ja niiden keskellä on naista kuvaava symboli."Kyllä, nämä pysäköintipaikat on räätälöity naisille.Se kuuluu toimenpiteisiin, joilla haluamme tehdä aluetta inhimillisemmäksi", Pan sanoo.Naisten pysäköintipaikat eivät ole Kiinassa uusi ilmiö, eikä muutenkaan ainutlaatuista maailmassa.Muualla naisten parkkipaikat kuitenkin liittyvät yleensä turvallisuuteen eikä ajotaitoon.Naisia syytetään Kiinassa usein huonoiksi kuskeiksi, mutta Iranin Journal of Public Healthin tutkimuksen mukaan liikennekuolleisuus on Kiinassa miehillä kolme kertaa korkeampi kuin naisilla riippumatta paikasta, iästä tai tulotasosta.

Sure, you can usually expect popular streaming services such as Netflix and Hulu to come standard, but not every device is going to allow you to remotely access your iTunes library or stream photos and video directly from your smartphone. The compact offering is slim and subtle, and equipped with nonskid rubber and enough weight to prevent it from getting shuffled around in your entertainment center.Voice search results also tend to favor the Amazon library, and the voice-compatible model will run you $10 more than the basic Fire TV Stick. The bright colors and rounded icons help, too.Systems such as the Xbox One and the PlayStation 4 have quickly become jack-of-all-trades media centers, conveniently giving you access to scores of programming from the likes of HBO Go, NFL Network, Netflix, and Hulu.Several other devices on our list provide gaming, but as you might expect, the next-gen consoles blow all mobile games out of the water in terms of graphics resolution and playability.

The NoonTec Zoro II are premium looking wireless headphones that NoonTec claims will last up to 35 hours on a single charge. The outer band of the Zoro II are attractively covered in a glossy piano-black finish, and the inner band is a rich red color with aluminum accents that wrap around the band.Sound quality is remarkably good for the price. The Zoro II sound especially clear in the treble and midrange registers. The coolest part about the Zoro II is the impressively long battery life. The premium design and clear sound make these headphones a pleasant surprise for the price, and we recommend giving them a shot.

SAN FRANCISCO By Sarah McBride, Reuters – Billionaire media owner Pierre Omidyar is backing news and entertainment web site Gawker Media in its lawsuit against wrestler Hulk Hogan, adding a new twist to a case pitting technology money against press freedom.Omidyar, owner of The Intercept publisher First Look Media, is asking other media outlets to file legal briefs in support of Gawker, First Look said in a statement on Friday. In 2012, Gawker had published a sex tape of Hogan, whose real name is Terry Bollea. The saga has become a lightning rod for debate about the role of money in the legal system and civic affairs.Omidyar, who made a fortune co-founding online auction site eBay, would support Gawker in its legal fight financially as well as via the court briefs, a person familiar with the situation said.A previous motion to intervene in the case was supported by several news outlets, First Look said, including Turner s Cable News Network and the Associated Press.Earlier this week, Peter Thiel, an early backer of Facebook and a co-founder of PayPal, acknowledged that he had played a lead role in financing Bollea s litigation.Gawker posted a 2007 article about Thiel entitled, Peter Thiel is totally gay, people.Omidyar, a long-time liberal, said on Twitter his actions were not personal.Click bait journalists need to be taught lessons.Far less ethics and more click chasing in press today.

Like any other reporter on deadline, I'm no stranger to stress. And in the age of wearable technology that monitors everything from steps to heart rate, it makes sense that devices that measure stress are popping up as well.Stress-monitoring devices can be helpful at quantifying your stress throughout the day. But wearing them around all the time and getting near-constant feedback via beeps or buzzes can sometimes result in more stress, not less. So, when I heard about a little un-wearable device for stress called the Pip, I was intrigued.Unlike a wearable tracker, the Pip doesn't monitor your stress levels throughout the day.Instead, you devote a few minutes once or twice a day to sit down, pull out your Pip, and practice getting in control of your stress.View As: One PageSlides

A man is suing Tesla in California over quality problems with the Model X's power doors and autopilotA Californian man is suing Tesla and demanding a refund on his Model X automobile after experiencing multiple problems with the car's automatic doors and autopilot – just the latest in a series of complaints from early adopters about quality issues. The power doors cannot be disabled as they one of the car's key features.California's Lemon LawThe lawsuit makes serious allegations about user safety, stating that the autopilot causes the car to swerve into different lanes when it rains.Others have experienced problems with the Model XUnfortunately, Lyon's problems are far from isolated – numerous early adopters of the Model X have reported quality issues about the power doors, double vision in the windshield at night, freezing touchscreen, windows that won't open or close all the way, problems with climate control, as well as multiple problems with finishings like panel gaps and paint spray quality detailed in a long PDF document posted by user Pheadrus on the Tesla Motors Club forum .And in April, Tesla itself discovered a problem with the recliners on the third-row seats, which meant that they could fold forwards during a crash, and had to recall 2,700 vehicles to replace the seat backs. The automobile manufacturer has a history of teething problems with its cars – when the Model S was first launched in 2013, it was considered by some to be "the world's most expensive beta test" thanks to the copious amount of problems discovered by early adopters.

Walgreens yes, that Walgreens — the one that also owns Duane Reade and is trying to buy Rite Aid for $17.2 billion has long offered a number of tools for developers who want to plug into both its retail and pharmacy business.Since then, the company expanded this program to allow developers to plug into its Balance Rewards loyalty program for apps that track fitness, for example and for services that enable prescription refills and transfers. The two new APIs will allow developers to access Walgreens store locations and the features of those stores and access its digital coupons from third-party apps. The company had built internal APIs for powering both its store locator and coupons in its own application, and now decided that it was time to extend this to others. For 2016, we want to focus on looking at extending services that help developers make innovative applications, Schweinfurth explained to me.The company also recently switched the checkout feature of its Photo Prints API from an SDK to a RESTful API, for example, which the company says is helping it drive more transactions.

Facebook "in feed" ads will still be displayed. It has also cut a deal with Three Italy and Digicel in the Caribbean. The move marks another significant milestone in the growth of mobile ad blocking.Digital publishers and app developers will be watching closely — they stand to lose out on revenue should the trend really kick off.Speaking to Business Insider, Three chief marketing officer Tom Malleschitz explained the mobile carrier wants to improve the mobile experience by ensuring:Customers don't pay data charges to receive adsTheir privacy is protectedTheir experience isn't "degraded" by excessive, intrusive, or unwanted ads." That implies that Three would look to enact some kind of "acceptable ads" procedure, whereby ads that are not likely to aggravate the consumer pass through the blocker.Adblock Plus has its own "Acceptable Ads Policy" which has critics, internet advertising trade body the IAB is trying to work with the industry to create "LEAN" advertising standards that it hopes everyone will adhere to, and Google is also looking to steer its own acceptable ad standard for the industry.Three is planning on working with a different industry body and publishers on a new set of ad standards.Malleschitz said he couldn't comment on the partner while the negotiations are still ongoing.Three says it isn't breaching net neutrality lawsWe also asked whether regulators might take notice of a mobile carrier deciding which ads are and aren't fit for the web. Then it will decide where to go next.NOW WATCH: An in-wall vacuum makes sweeping so much easierLoading video...

Artist's concept of the BEAM module attached to the International Space Station. The roughly 3000-pound BEAM was first blasted up to the ISS in April aboard a SpaceX Falcon rocket. This first test of an expandable module will allow investigators to gauge how well the habitat performs and specifically, how well it protects against solar radiation, space debris and the temperature extremes of space, NASA said in a statement.NASA says that expandable modules like BEAM promise to be both lighter and smaller than traditional modules, and are thus easier to transport into space. It will eventually be jettisoned from the station and then burn up in the Earth s atmosphere.Follow Rob Verger on Twitter: @robverger

But Texas-based Corydoras Technologies LLC has taken the practice of buying old, generic patents and then claiming infringements to new lows.Specifically, Corydoras has launched a lawsuit against the Cupertino company as 20 of its devices are capable of making phone calls, FaceTime calls, and/or FaceTime Audio calls using voice commands, according to Patently Apple. The company wants Apple to pay up because some of the main functions of the 20 named devices - including the iPhone 4 and above, iPad 2 and above, and iPad mini and above - supposedly infringe on these patents. In addition to the voice/FaceTime calls, Corydoras says other Apple infringements include sending and receiving emails, front-facing cameras, displaying geographic locations, a microphone and speaker, specifically assigned ringtones, call-blocking, and the virtual assistant because Siri can perform voice-controlled dialing .The case is set to be heard by Judge Rodney Gilstrap, and will hopefully be dismissed quickly. It brought an almost identical lawsuit against Samsung in March using the same patents, only to have the case dismissed in April.

I was talking with some people recently about self-driving cars and how one day you'll be able to pull your phone out of your pocket and order a taxi, and it'll show up just like an Uber car, only without the driver in fact, Uber's working hard to ditch all of its human drivers .We adjust our habits or actions in light of both strangers' awareness and our own awareness of their awareness...even if we don't realize we're doing so.Of course, these future autonomous taxis will probably have more than a couple varieties of deterrents: perhaps a security camera that monitors everything you do, the threat of paying handsomely for any damage you're proven to have caused, and the public shame of being blacklisted from a particularly popular mode of transportation.Who cares about potentially paying damages if you're registered with a limited-funds prepaid credit card and under a fake name?If cartoonish printed eyes on a sign can deter littering, can a pair of life-like eyes somewhere inside an autonomous car keep bored or otherwise destructive people in check?Or, in a less draconian fashion, manufacturers may choose to distract their riders into peaceful obedience with on-board VR headsets and built-in movie projectors.

Google believes artificial intelligence AI is the future, so much so that it started making its own custom processors to allow its algorithms to learn faster.Since machine learning requires less computational precision, Google is able to squeeze more operations per second out of a chip.Typical processors run with 32 or 64-bits of precision, whereas Google's TPU operates at 8-bits.Google estimates its TPU chips allowed it to "fast-forward" technology about seven years over using off-the-shelf processors. The chips even allowed Google's AI to beat a Go world champion. The company hopes developers will use machine learning to create better apps for its platforms like Android.

The region is a hotspot for malware-based spying campaign thanks largely to the conflict between the Kiev government and rebels in the East who identify with Russia. The majority of such campaigns feature booby-trapped content themed around the current Ukrainian geopolitical situation and the war in Donbass in order to trick marks into opening malicious attachments.Whether these secondary targets are been deliberately selected or represent collateral damage remains unclear.ESET detects the malware associated with the attacks, which may have been going on since as long ago as 2008, as Prikormka. The attacks seem to have slipped under the radar for eight years but now that one anti-virus vendor has caught onto the campaign, widespread detection by other vendors can be expected to follows within days or weeks. The security community in general is playing particularly close attention to malware-slinging in the Ukraine after the BlackEnergy malware was linked to attacks that results in power outages last December.
