President Donald Trump hosted a roundtable with six former hostages during the first night of the Republican National Convention, at one point telling a pastor held in Turkey for two years that Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan “was very good” despite the former hostage’s ordeal.Trump made the comments to Andrew Brunson, an evangelical pastor from North Carolina, who was arrested in Turkey in 2016 on espionage and terrorism charges. US officials had long accused Turkey of using Brunson as a political pawn alongside nearly two dozen other Turkish Americans who were arrested following a coup attempt. The White House levied tariffs and upped political pressure on the Erdogan government, and the pastor was ultimately released in 2018 after the Trump administration personally raised the case with Erdogan. But despite Brunson’s detention, in the brief segment, Trump doubled down on his praise for the Turkish strongman, a regular theme of his administration."To me, President Erdogan was very good" -- Trump to Pastor Brunson, who was imprisoned by Erdogan's regime pic.twitter.com/1NmyU1tGOo— Aaron Rupar (@atrupar) August 25, 2020Throughout his time in office, Trump has called Erdogan a “great ally,” a “strong man” and said he’s a “big fan” of the man despite criticism over the Turkish leader’s efforts to silence critics.“We have six incredible people who were held hostage by various countries, and I am very pleased to let everyone know that we brought back over 50 hostages from 22 different countries, we worked very hard on it,” Trump said in the segment before turning to Brunson.“We had to get you back,” he continued. “I have to say, to me, President Erdogan was very good. I know they had you scheduled for a long time and you were a very innocent person, and he ultimately after we had a few conversations, he agreed.” It’s unusual for a sitting US president to tout their efforts to secure the release of hostages for political purposes, and equally remarkable to do so during a party convention from the White House.Brunson said he was grateful to the Trump administration for its efforts to bring him home, telling the president he thought “if you hadn’t done that, I think I would still be in Turkey.”“I was held in Turkey for two years, and you took unprecedented steps actually to secure my release, and your administration really fought for me,” the pastor said. “I’m really grateful.”Related... 5 Takeaways From The First Night Of The 2020 Republican National Convention US Talk Show Host John Oliver Shows How Trump Built The Perfect ‘F**king Monument’ To Himself Donald Trump Praised By Controversial Polish MEP After Bizarre 'We Want God' Tweet

Photo by: Don & Melinda Crawford/Education Images/Universal Images Group via Getty Images AT&T-owned Cricket Wireless is enabling 5G support on some of its plans, the company announced. But oddly, even though the appeal to most customers of prepaid plans like Cricket is a lower price, the company’s only 5G compatible device so far is the $1,199 Samsung Galaxy S20 Plus. And getting access to 5G on Cricket requires subscribing to one of its Unlimited plans, which start at $60 per month. Cricket will likely use AT&T’s low-band 5G network (the announcement didn’t specify much in the way of technical details), which uses low-band 850MHz spectrum technology that has broader range but slower speeds than its mmWave 5G, which AT&T calls its 5G Plus network. The latter is currently limited to developers and select businesses. T-Mobile... Continue reading…
TLDR: Degoo Premium offers 10TB of premium cloud storage space with robust backup protection across all of your devices. If there was a single paralyzing fear in the first 20 years of computing, the one that filled both experts and occasional users alike with dread, it was probably the fear of forgetting to back up your work.  If you didn’t stash critical in-progress work or your gotta-have-em documents to an external hard drive with regularity, there was always the fear that a crash could delete all that valuable data forever.   Thankfully, the cloud and its automatic backup features have mostly… This story continues at The Next Web

Google will run a trial with Chrome 86, the browser set to release in October, that will hide much of a site's URL as a way to foil phishing attacks."We're ... going to experiment with how URLs are shown in the address bar on desktop platforms," Emily Stark, Eric Mill and Shweta Panditrao, all members of Chrome's security team, wrote in an Aug. 12 post to a company blog. "Our goal is to understand -- through real-world usage -- whether showing URLs this way helps users realize they're visiting a malicious website, and protects them from phishing and social engineering attacks."To read this article in full, please click here

There are early reports of “serious injuries” after a train derailed near Stonehaven in Aberdeenshire in what is being classed as a “major incident”, Scottish first minister Nicola Sturgeon has said.Pictures posted from the scene showed at least six ambulance vehicles, an air ambulance and a number of police response cars at the scene.Smoke could be seen billowing in the background.Latest update from the scene. @[email protected]@BBCNewspic.twitter.com/Kmtiq9u1a2— Ben Philip (@BenPhilip_) August 12, 2020Rail industry sources told the PA news agency that the suspected cause of the incident was a landslip. Heavy rain and flooding also affected the area on Wednesday morning. The train involved was the 6.38am Aberdeen to Stonehaven, made up of an engine and four carriages. It is reported that the engine and three carriages derailed, and slid down an embankment.West Aberdeenshire and Kincardine MP Andrew Bowie said the local hospital had declared a major incident. He told the PA news agency: “It’s obviously a terrible situation, a train derailment, the emergency services are on the scene.“I’ve already spoken to Grant Shapps, who has spoken to Network Rail and the British Transport Police who are obviously investigating and assisting. I am aware that Aberdeen Royal Infirmary has declared a major incident.”Speaking before First Minister’s Questions on Thursday, Nicola Sturgeon said that although “details are still emerging”, there are “early reports of serious injuries”.“My immediate thoughts and the thoughts of those across the chamber are with all those involved.”The Scottish government’s resilience room is also now operational, and the first minister said she will convene a meeting this afternoon. This is an extremely serious incident. I’ve had an initial report from Network Rail and the emergency services and am being kept updated. All my thoughts are with those involved. https://t.co/veKAgMwZ36— Nicola Sturgeon (@NicolaSturgeon) August 12, 2020Prime minister Boris Johnson said he was “saddened” to hear about the “serious incident,” tweeting that his thoughts were with everyone affected. ScotRail posted a message on Twitter shortly after 6.30am warning that services across Scotland would be disrupted due to “extremely heavy rain flooding”.A video shared on Facebook at 7.30am shows heavy flooding in Stonehaven.Bowie had been in Stonehaven surveying the flood damage earlier on Wednesday, describing the situation as “really bad”.He said: “The main river which flows through it, had burst its banks and the heavy rain had caused flooding in the centre of Stonehaven and lots of the side streets leading off it.“Luckily, the water receded incredibly quickly and the river has peaked and is going down. Obviously none of us expected there to be such a serious incident as a rail derailment at the same time, but it just goes to show how damaging the bad weather can be.”He added: “I don’t think speculation is helpful at this stage. We obviously don’t know why the derailment took place, but obviously we have suffered terrible weather here.”This is a breaking news story and will be updated.
