Lyft announced new features for its app on Tuesday aimed at improving passenger safety.Along with a button in the app that lets riders dial 911, the ride-hailing company is making the image of drivers' license plates bigger."Lyft is relentlessly focused on finding new ways to further strengthen safety measures on our platform," Mary Winfield, Lyft's head of trust and safety, said in a blog post. The move comes after scores of assaults, kidnappings and rapes have allegedly been perpetrated by Lyft and Uber drivers. And a handful of states -- including California, Colorado, Massachusetts and Texas -- have previously launched investigations into Uber and Lyft, alleging they routinely fail to screen drivers adequately and have hired drivers with criminal histories.Just last month a student from the University of South Carolina was allegedly murdered by a man who said he was her Uber driver.
Whether you're hosting a barbecue and looking to include a few meatless options for wellness, or you're en route to a BYO-meat grill party and need to pick up some vegetarian grill fare for your vegetarian self, you've got a lot of meat-free options to barbecue this summer! The kicker is, some brands of meatless protein are better for the grill than others -- and sure, most products work at a barbecue, but don't you want to go for the best? Here's our roundup of the most excellent meat-free grilling patties, sausages and 'dogs. These products and services are independently chosen by our editors.Alas, since the Impossible Burger is not available at grocery stores until later this year, it can't be included in our list of recommendations.Pea protein, coconut oil and beets create a patty with 20 grams of protein plus a texture and look not too far from that of a beef burger (though it may have a somewhat coconut-y aftertaste).
The Trump administration is working to ban Huawei products from the US market and ban US companies from supplying the Chinese company with software and components. The move will have wide-ranging consequences for Huawei's smartphone, laptop, and telecom-equipment businesses. The US Department of Commerce (DOC) has granted temporary general export license for 90 days, so while the company is still banned from doing business with most US companies, it is allowed to continue critical product support.Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross explains the new exemption, saying, "The Temporary General License authorizes certain activities necessary to the continued operations of existing networks and to support existing mobile services, including cybersecurity research critical to maintaining the integrity and reliability of existing and fully operational networks and equipment."The DOC's focus with this announcement seems to be cell-carrier operators.Huawei doesn't have a large presence in US telecom, but some carriers in rural states like Wyoming and Oregon have adopted Huawei equipment.
You’ll have to wait for our full review for the final verdict on that, but for a rundown of how it differs from its predecessor, read on.We’ve compared the two phones across all the key categories including design, display, camera and more, so you can see just how much of an upgrade the Honor 20 really is.The new phone has an almost all-screen front, with just a small bezel below the display and a punch-hole camera in the top left corner, while the Honor 10 has a slightly larger bottom bezel, as it’s used to house a fingerprint scanner (whereas the Honor 20 puts its scanner on the side). From the back there’s less difference as both phones sport striking, reflective glass rears, but while the Honor 10 has a horizontally arranged dual-lens camera, the Honor 20 has a vertically stacked quad-lens setup.Honor 20 vs Honor 10 displayThe Honor 20’s screen is larger but no sharper than the Honor 10’s, coming in at 6.26 inches with a resolution of 1080 x 2340 and a pixel density of 412 pixels per inch (PPI), while the Honor 10’s screen is 5.84 inches, with a resolution of 1080 x 2280 and a pixel density of 432ppi.
Virtual reality (VR) concepts have existed for more than three decades, however the industry has only recently started to demonstrate its potential use into a variety of markets. However, VR environments are now increasingly being used in areas such as manufacturing, training, heritage, and architecture. The healthcare sector is another prominent market that has been making increasing use of virtual and augmented reality for training, administering of surgical procedures, mental health, and rehabilitation practices. The support of patient recovery is an application particularly well suited to VR, and there are a number of emerging applications that address brain injury assessment, orthopaedic rehabilitation, balance exercises and cognitive fidelity. While these vary in configuration, most use 'off-the-shelf' controllers to assist, with limited motor capability and concern single users interacting only with the practitioner.PRIME-VR2 goes beyond this in the creation of an end-to-end integrated digital development platform, to facilitate collaboration across stakeholders in the VR ecosystem to produce effective VR rehabilitation environments.
North Carolina State University researchers have developed a new framework for building deep neural networks via grammar-guided network generators. In experimental testing, the new networks - called AOGNets - have outperformed existing state-of-the-art frameworks, including the widely-used ResNet and DenseNet systems, in visual recognition tasks."AOGNets have better prediction accuracy than any of the networks we've compared it to," says Tianfu Wu, an assistant professor of electrical and computer engineering at NC State and corresponding author of a paper on the work. The new framework uses a compositional grammar approach to system architecture that draws on best practices from previous network systems to more effectively extract useful information from raw data.To test their new framework, the researchers developed AOGNets and tested them against three image classification benchmarks: CIFAR-10, CIFAR-100 and ImageNet-1K."AOGNets obtained significantly better performance than all of the state-of-the-art networks under fair comparisons, including ResNets, DenseNets, ResNeXts and DualPathNets," Wu says.
As technology transforms the education landscape, The University of Texas at Arlington is on the leading edge with the development of new technologies, tools and instrumentation to better support continuous upgrading of knowledge needed to succeed in the workforce.George Siemens, UTA professor of psychology, has received a grant from The Boeing Company to construct an integrated data infrastructure that will centralize digital learning and engagement tools. The goal is to enable a better understanding of both learning in digital environments and the personalized learning constructs needed by workers.Siemens said his research endeavors to discover how people interact with technology as a cognitive peer to build knowledge and solve problems in both higher education and corporate environments."That changes almost all aspects of the learning system. We're trying to understand what the impact of cognitive technology, or artificial intelligence, is on the human knowledge development process."
For the ongoing series, Code Word, we’re exploring if — and how — technology can protect individuals against sexual assault and harassment, and how it can help and support survivors.New companies and projects are employing emerging technologies, like Callisto, which harnesses blockchain technology to store and record information and anonymize records. These can be exchanged for discounts to clothing stores or restaurants, but it’s now also being used as a resource for students to stay safe on college campuses.Less than 10 percent will ever report their assault to the police and those who do, on average, wait 11 months to make their report. After Johanson’s own friend was assaulted on a college campus, he was inspired to create a tangible resource for friends to easily stay in touch and keep each other safe.In an effort to promote Sexual Assault Awareness Month in April, bthere partnered with It’s On Us, a project created by Barack Obama and The White House Council on Women and Girls, to help prevent sexual assault on college campuses.
Yesterday, Chinese company ByteDance – which owns TikTok, Helo, and Vigo Video – launched a chat app called Flipchat. Now, a new report from Bloomberg suggests its reportedly launching a music streaming app this year. The report notes that the company has already secured rights from two of India’s biggest music labels – T-series and Times Music – and is in talks with other global record companies. It adds that ByteDance is looking to release the app in emerging markets to rival Spotify and Apple Music.A report from Economic Times fuels the rumor further by saying the company is looking to launch the app in July. One of the reasons for TikTok’s popularity is its library of songs.
A year and a half after introducing its first Quantum-branded version of Firefox, Mozilla is still working to speed up its web browser. The new Firefox 67, released Tuesday, concentrates its attention on important parts of website code, speeding up Instagram, Amazon and Google by 40% to 80%, the nonprofit said.It also puts background tabs on hold when you have less than 400MB of free memory to try to avoid slowdowns.Speed is crucial to life online.Statistically, you'll perform more searches, read more news and do more shopping when websites load faster. But for all Mozilla's effort, the number of people using Firefox monthly continues to dwindle -- down from about 300 million when Mozilla released the first Firefox Quantum in November 2017 to about 257 million today, according to Mozilla statistics.
For some people, too much fermentation can cause digestive issues like bloating, gas, diarrhea, and abdominal pain.We had four people try this device to see if it would help them figure out what's causing their negative symptoms.Michelle Yan: Burping, farting, bloating, diarrhea: We all experience these things.Gene: And also violent diarrhea.Manny: I don't know exactly what I'm reacting to.You mix it into a little bit of water, and then for three hours while you have an empty digestive system, except for this one FODMAP, we can test you and see if you're fermenting a lot from this.
Mozilla has unleashed a new version of Firefox, which is claims is faster than ever thanks to a strategy it's calling 'procrastinate on purpose'.Unlike human procrastination (displacement activity like washing the dishes instead of completing a tax return), Mozilla's system involves creating a 'to-do' list and performing tasks at the optimal time.Features that are rarely used have been deprioritized, which means the page can be rendered more quickly. For example, the browser won't search for alternative style sheets until after the page has loaded, and won't load its auto-fill module until there's actually a form on the screen that will use it.If your system is running low on memory (below 400MB), Firefox will now suspend any tabs that you haven't used for a while.Any suspended tabs will reload when clicked.
When Borderlands came out 10 years ago, the industry and gamers took notice. It became one of the most popular and well-reviewed games of 2009, praised for its slick visuals, its silliness and its array of guns and items you could collect throughout its world.Borderlands also ushered in a new genre of game by combining a first-person shooter, where you play the game through the eyes of the main character, with role-playing game (RPG) elements and a heavy focus on obtaining the best weapons. They included titles like Ubisoft's post-apocalyptic survival game Tom Clancy's The Division, the fantasy game Anthem from Electronic Arts, and the space battle epic Destiny from Bungie.Borderlands itself has had several follow-ups, including Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel, which came out in 2014 to mixed reviews. After years of teasing and speculation by developer Gearbox Software, the company finally said Borderlands 3 is coming on Sept. 13.
Last year Vizio's customary place as best TV for the money was usurped by the TCL 6 series, which beat out Vizio's M-Series for CNET's Editors' Choice award.Meanwhile, at the higher-end, an LG OLED got the award, but the superb Vizio P-Series Quantum earned a nod as the ideal OLED alternative for video-quality snobs without money to burn. Now four series of new 2019 Vizios go on sale starting today, and all aim for the value bullseye. The budget models all have 4K HDR, Dolby Vision, Google Chromecast built-in and Apple AirPlay 2, but Vizio's best chance to earn more awards comes from its midrange models.Quite a lot of QuantumsUnlike Samsung, Sony and LG, Vizio won't sell any any TVs with 8K resolution or any of those fancy HDMI 2.1 features like auto game mode and variable refresh rate.
There’s nothing subtle about a 65-inch TV.When I went down to help the delivery guy bring the Vizio P-Series Quantum up to my apartment, a stranger in the lobby congratulated me like I was bringing home a newborn. After watching everything on it, it’s hard not to be impressed—despite some sticker shock.Any 65-inch TV is enormous, and Vizio's four aluminum support legs require a very wide surface to stand on.It is stunningly large and quite thin for an LCD TV: half an inch at its thinnest point and just over 2 inches at its thickest.I own a Sony Bravia that's just a few years old and much thicker.

“Requests in question affected approximately 250 public network users.Affected users will be notified by us.”Developer community Stack Overflow has confirmed that some of its user data has been accessed in the breach it suffered this month.Originally Stack Overflow stated that they experienced an intrusion into its systems on May 11, but this has now been pushed back to May 5, the date it believes its systems were first accessed.Mary Ferguson VP of Engineering at Stack Overflow confirmed in a security blog post that: “We have identified privileged web requests that the attacker made that could have returned IP address, names, or emails for a very small number of Stack Exchange users.”Stack Overflow later confirmed that the web request went out to approximately 250 public networks.
The Golf is to Volkswagen what the iPhone is to Apple. While the hatchback is still a few months away from making its debut, Volkswagen released a pair of design sketches and preliminary information that give us a taste of what to expect from it.One of the sketches suggest the eighth-generation model is still recognizable as a Golf, but it’s not merely a careful update of the current, seventh-generation car. While the next Golf will be the eighth generation of the nameplate, one look inside suggests it may as well be the 10th.It’s kept what people have loved and moved it to the next phase,” Volkswagen board member Juergen Stackmann told British magazine Autocar. To that end, designers have also drastically reduced the number of buttons, dials, and switches in the cabin to achieve a cleaner, more elegant look.
On Tuesday, $967 million data management startup DataStax launched DataStax Constellation, a new cloud platform.DataStax says this is the first cloud that's designed for Apache Cassandra—an open source database project that started at Facebook, and is used by companies like Instagram, Reddit, Netflix, and more.Business Insider recently reported that two top executives at DataStax will be leaving the company, amid a reorganization that comes ahead of a rumored IPO.Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories. It's DataStax's cloud platform, for developers to use as they wish, in the same way that Amazon Web Services belongs to the retail giant."It's a long term vision for our next evolution for the company," DataStax CEO Billy Bosworth told Business Insider.
In the common model we see today, it’s something like this: Brands push out relevant messaging, hoping to compel a response or interaction that leads to a conversation (and maybe ultimately a conversion). These back-and-forths between brands and individuals are important ingredients toward building trust and loyalty.Devising and creating content that drives targeted engagement is hard work. Why Communities Matter to Digital MarketersIn his seminal book, Tribes: We Need You to Lead Us, Seth Godin writes about turning scattered groups of followers into a unified “tribe,” which he defines as “a group of people connected to one another, connected to a leader, and connected to an idea.”Human beings have long gravitated toward these communal experiences, elevating the collective power of their interests, beliefs, or passions.
