Call of Duty: Mobile has had a colossal launch week, racking up more downloads than any other mobile game in history, according to analytics firm Sensor Tower. The game has reportedly achieved over 100 million downloads since going live at the beginning of this month. That easily beats out the launch-week figures that Sensor Tower recorded for games that will be Call of Duty’s biggest rivals. While PUBG Mobile, for example, got 28 million downloads in its first week, its rollout was staggered across regions. The mobile version of Fortnite, meanwhile, was downloaded 22.5 million times, but it was only available on iOS at first.Worth noting that this is without a China launch either.

Now a team of Penn State researchers have a model that can locate the best place for the wind farm and even help with 24-hour predictions of energy output."Normally, people planning to build a wind farm will look for good terrain and an average wind speed that is not too strong and not too weak, but consistent," said Guido Cervone, professor of geography, and meteorology and atmospheric science."We found a more accurate and efficient way to look at wind predictability at specific locations, a key factor when considering building a new wind farm.Location, for general electrical output, is important, but being able to predict how much wind energy the farm will be able to produce 24 hours in the future is also important.Electricity suppliers purchase the energy produced by wind farms and want reliability.Wind farms routinely sell their electrical output to the suppliers, but they would also like to be able to schedule, 24 hours in advance, how much power they will produce.

If Wing has its way, autonomous drones will soon save residents of two towns in Southwest Virginia a trip to the drug store and bakery. The Alphabet X lab graduate will next month launch a pilot to make available on-demand delivery from FedEx Express, Walgreens, and Sugar Magnolia. And on the FedEx Express side, recipients living within designated Christiansburg zones who opt in will receive some shipments via drone, in customized boxes.Wing says most deliveries are fulfilled within about 10 minutes.“[This will] demonstrate the benefits of drone delivery by improving access to health care products, creating new avenues of growth for local businesses, and exploring ways to enhance efficiency of last-mile delivery service,” wrote Wing in a Medium post.“Christiansburg was selected as the pilot location in part because of Wing’s ongoing partnership with Virginia Tech’s Mid-Atlantic Aviation Partnership (MAAP), located in nearby Blacksburg.”
Philippine president Rodrigo Duterte defended a deal allowing a Chinese state-backed telecommunications company to construct and manage communications towers on bases belonging to the military in a statement to journalists on Wednesday. Why it matters: In stark contrast to the US-led campaign cautioning against China’s involvement in the construction of 5G networks worldwide, President Duterte rejected claims that China Telecom could use its position to spy on the Philippines military.Details: The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) signed a relevant memorandum of understanding last week with Dito Telecommunications, a consortium led by domestic conglomerate Udenna Corporation and China Telecom. The deal would allow Dito Telecommunications, previously known as Mislatel, to install bases and relay towers on military bases. The AFP has similar deals with two homegrown telecom firms, Globe Telecom and PLDT-Smart, the AFP told local media. The memorandum is still awaiting approval from the Philippine Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana, who was traveling abroad when the agreement was struck and reportedly not informed about it.

A lot of important news happened this week in the world of cybersecurity, but let's start with this: It's becoming increasingly hard to collect the money Equifax owes you from the settlement over its disastrous breach. You can still get your $125, or even more.Despite the hoopla over Apple's latest iPhones, the biggest iOS news this month might be the recent large-scale hacking campaign against it.And while IoT security has surprisingly improved of late, it still has a long, long, very extremely long way to go.A new look at the 2016 cyberattack that triggered a blackout in Ukraine showed that the intended results may have been far more explosive than what transpired. And national security adviser John Bolton has left the White House.

Semiconductors represent the cornerstone technology of the information age. These tiny devices power the world’s modern economies by serving as the data-processing brains in a wide range of products, from personal computers and smartphones to cars and spacecraft.Despite hefty investments in the semiconductor industry over the years, China remains dependent on the US for high-end integrated circuits.Zhou Zhiping, a Peking University professor of microelectronics, spoke to the South China Morning Post on the sidelines of the Smart China Expo held last month in the southwestern city of Chongqing.Zhou was a founder and vice president of production of the Hengnan Transistor Factory in China from 1971 to 1978 and a guest scientist at the National Institute of Standards and Technology in the US from 1987 to 1989.He is now a Changjiang professor at Peking University and guest chief scientist of Chongqing-based semiconductor firm United Microelectronics Center.
