Welcome to a new edition of The Monitor, WIRED’s culture news roundup.Lots of headlines from the frontlines of the streaming wars today.Apple’s TV+ might have already launched earlier this month, but it’s still rolling out its slate of shows.Next up: a new trailer for M. Night Shyamalan’s Servant. The series is about a Philadelphia couple that hires a nanny, and—you guessed it!—lets a dark, creepy presence into their home.(Do you expect anything less from Shyamalan?)
First, there was iTunes and selling music online, then movies and TV shows.Later came Apple Music, a streaming service provided for a monthly fee, and earlier this year there was News+, a news service... provided for a monthly fee.Apple TV+ is a pretty good deal if you like more than one of the shows available on the platform.Everyone likes to compare and contrast and examine Metacritic and Rotten Tomato scores to get a sense of how successful Apple has actually been.Only where The Good shows take a very deliberate stand when addressing touchy political subjects and nationwide moral crises, The Morning Show is content to saunter down the middle of the line, aggressively taking no sides, much like Reese Witherspoon’s character, libertarian reporter Bradley Jackson. For All Mankind feels like it falls into the same trappings sometimes, giving us two tedious episodes of sexist astronaut men feeling sad they cannot astronaut before veering toward the actual premise of the show – a moon landing program revolving around women astronauts.
Debt is as American as baseball, apple pie, and the Norman Rockwell conception of life in this country that refuses to die despite all of the evidence that it only existed, briefly, for a very small group of people.Digit — the automatic savings app that deducts small amounts from your checking account and deposits them into an account you designate — has decided to get further into the debt game. Now, you can use the app to pay off your student loans. As the company notes, most college seniors graduated with student debt (in 2017, per its numbers), and the average American household with student debt owes nearly $50,000.The student debt crisis is in full swing: approximately 45 million people owe $1.5 trillion, which makes student loans the kind of workaday, onerous burden that everyone feels.Digit can help you pay down at least some of that debt painlessly in the same way that the app does everything else.
When it comes to design, the JBL 3 looks almost exactly like most JBL speakers. It has a curved cylindrical shape, weighing 1.76 pounds and with dimensions of 213 x 87 x 88.5 mm.The Charge 3 can also be submerged in meter-deep water for 30 minutes without worries. On the top of the Charge 3 you’ll find buttons for power, Bluetooth pairing, volume control, play/pause/skip and a unique JBL Connect button. This button allows you to connect multiple JBL Connect speakers (including the Charge 4) to each other so they can play music simultaneously. The Charge 3 also features dual external passive radiators that vibrate with bass-heavy tracks.
Data-fetching scheme seems to be catching onAt the GraphQL Summit in San Francisco on Wednesday, Matt DeBergalis, co-founder and CTO at data plumbing biz Apollo GraphQL, urged companies to appoint a data graph champion to help ease the implementation of GraphQL, a query language for fetching data. But at a gathering arranged by Apollo, which makes the de facto standard open-source client and the commercial Apollo GraphQL Platform, there's a certain incentive to imagine GraphQL everywhere. It's already halfway there, at least among the 472 companies attending the show – about 52 per cent of organizations represented are already using the technology in production.GraphQL was created at Facebook in 2012 and released as an open-source project three years later. After a licensing change in 2017 and a move to the Linux Foundation last year, it has more or less settled down and come to terms with itself as a more capable alternative to REST.

Tesla thinks its clever solar panel roof tiles are ready for primetime. Now in their third iteration, Tesla announced its new Solar Roof tiles are now available to order and installations will begin in a few weeks. The tiles are a pricey install at approximately $42,500 for a 2,000 sqft, although that price comes can be reduced by $8,550 with federal tax incentives if installed prior to the end of the year.Elon Musk claims that for most people, it’s cheaper than replacing your roof and adding separate solar panels at the same time.In other words, it’s targeted at people who are thinking of replacing their roof anyway; Musk says it’s better to go the traditional solar power route if you think your roof has 10 years of life left to it.The tiles are less efficient than a traditional solar panel for a given area, but because they’re able to cover a wider surface, they should be able to gather more energy overall.
Both cars have a range of 200 miles, a top speed of 100 mph, and 614 horsepower.Bollinger Motors, a Michigan-based electric truck startup, has announced the price of its first vehicles. Both all-electric, all-wheel-drive B1 Sport Utility Truck and B2 Pickup Truck will have an MSRP of $125,000, a hefty price tag compared to Tesla's nearly $85,000 Tesla Model X SUV."If you could take everything you love about a classic truck and combine it with the most refined essentials of a modern truck, redesign it with the highest quality materials and components available, oh and make it an electric vehicle — you'd have the basics for the Bollinger B1 electric sport utility truck," the automaker said in its website.Production will start this year, and the first deliveries will happen in 2021.Keep scrolling to learn more about the B1 and its pickup truck counterpart:

SoftBank is reportedly eyeing a plan to rescue WeWork from its precarious financial situation that would value the company below $8 billion, according to a new report from Bloomberg. The embattled office-sharing company is weighing competing bailout plans from SoftBank and JPMorgan in order to avoid running out of cash, which could reportedly happen as soon as next month.A sub-$8 billion valuation from SoftBank would be a steep drop-off from the $47 billion the Japanese investment group privately valued WeWork at in January.WeWork executives have been cutting jobs, selling off some of the company's holdings, and slashing side projects like WeGrow in the aftermath of its failed IPO attempt.WeWork's financial woes could lead its valuation to slip below $8 billion, Bloomberg's Gillian Tan, Sonali Basak, Michelle Davis, and Saritha Rai reported on Friday.SoftBank is mulling the possible valuation as part of a proposed WeWork bailout, according to the report.
Luna Display, the solution that lets you use an iPad as a secondary display for your Mac, now works Mac to Mac.Announcing the new functionality in a blog post, Luna Display says that the feature works between any combination of iMacs, Mac minis, and MacBooks running on macOS 10.8 Mountain Lion or later. In a tweet, Luna Display CEO Matt Ronge said that the functionality was a direct response to being “sherlocked” by Apple’s new Sidecar feature, which builds much of Luna Display’s functionality natively into macOS Catalina.Apple’s first-party solution only lets you use iPad tablets as a secondary display. The new functionality should help you find a use for any old Mac lying around, which you might have been tempted to sell or recycle.Over on Daring Fireball John Gruber notes that the feature will be especially helpful for anyone who owns an older 5K iMac, who now has the option of pairing that computer’s excellent display with some more modern hardware.
It might not surprise you to know that Lamborghini is kind of a small company, and frankly, it doesn't build that many cars.Still, it's making more cars now than it ever has, and that's evident in the fact that -- according to an announcement made by the company on Monday -- it managed to surpass the total number of its Gallardo's 10-year production in just 5 years with the Huracan.Well, that five-year production total amounts to just 14,022 cars. For comparison's sake, that's less than three weeks' worth of production for Tesla's Model 3, and we'd hazard a guess that it's less than a day's total output for a company like General Motors.Still, the Huracan's massive (by Lamborghini standards) success has afforded the company a lot of opportunities to do cool stuff that it could never dream of 20 or 30 years ago, such as building an SUV, setting a Nurburgring lap record, or considering participating in the top class at Le Mans.Lamborghini has further managed to increase its sales by 96% over 2018, and that's pretty wild.
One of President Donald Trump’s most prolific supporters and meme creators, known online as Carpe Donktum, was suspended from Twitter Monday after a video depicting the president killing off journalists and critics, created by people connected to him, surfaced over the weekend. The New York Times reported that the video was played at a pro-Trump event in Florida over the weekend, causing significant uproar among the press, many of whom saw it as encouraging violence against journalists. On Monday, The Washington Post reported that the video was created by TheGeekzTeam, a group of creators that often contributes to MemeWorld, which was created byTwitter did not immediately respond to a request for comment as to why the account was suddenly removed. However, Donktum spent Monday morning re-uploading much of his older content on his Twitter feed in response to the controversy. It’s unclear if the video from over the weekend played a role in the suspension.
If I drew up a diagram of the perfect traditional laptop, a maxed-out Dell XPS 15 7590 would come pretty damn close.Did I mention it’s got one of the largest batteries you can carry on a plane — 97Wh — to keep it all charged?OLED screen is a battery hogAfter over a month of testing, there’s no question: the new 2019 model is even more desirable than the laptop that wowed me two and a half years ago.OLED laptops are an idea whose time has come, and my heart sings when I stream a 4K HDR movie on the exceptionally clear, searingly bright OLED non-touchscreen that Dell offers starting at the $1,949 mark.Netflix works great as long as you’re using Microsoft’s Edge browser, but I was astounded to find the state of Windows and 4K / HDR playback is still so poor: when I tried to fire up my copy of Blade Runner 2049 in Vudu, Google Play Movies & TV, Movies Anywhere, FandangoNow, and Microsoft’s own Movies & TV app, I discovered none of them support HDR on Windows PCs, few support 4K, and those that do didn’t recognize the XPS 15 as 4K-ready.

The OnePlus 7T Pro is set to be launched on October 10, and in true OnePlus fashion the company has been teasing the launch event with a slow drip of information in the lead-up – the latest news being that there's set to be a McLaren Edition. That's according to OnePlus itself, so this isn't just any leak where the information is dubious – the company doesn't specify if it's the 7T Pro that will have a McLaren Edition, but we've already seen the OnePlus 7T launch without a car-themed version, so we're expecting it to be the newest flagship. We'd previously heard rumors of the OnePlus 7T Pro McLaren Edition too, including OnePlus CEO Pete Lau tweeting a cryptic image hinting at it, so this isn't a huge surprise.McLaren is a British racing car manufacturer, but it has also got its fingers in other pies, one of which is working with OnePlus to create smartphones. It's not the only car company to work on handsets, with for example the Huawei Mate 30 launching in a Mate 30 Porsche edition version. What is the OnePlus 7T Pro McLaren Edition?
Vivo’s V lineup is probably one of the most interesting mid-range series on the market.Vivo V17 Pro Review: Premium Mid-Range Camera PhoneAs always, let’s start with the unboxing. The V17 Pro comes with a black package with the main selling points of the device clearly showing on it; we’re talking about the dual cameras at the front and the four at the back.Once we open the box we find a cardboard with the manual, the USB Type-C cable and the included phone case, which we have to admit isn’t one of the best we’ve seen. That’s because it’s made of very hard plastic, making it almost impossible to apply or remove quickly.
