Allianz X, the venture capital arm attached to German insurance giant Allianz, has increased the size of its fund to €1 billion, around $1.1 billion, according to an announcement made today. The fund was initially €430 million, or around $490 million, when it launched in 2016.This new injection comes directly from parent Allianz SE, the 124-year-old insurer which did €130 billion ($150 billion) in revenue last year, and it makes Allianz X one of the largest active startup investment vehicles in Europe. While it is anchored in Europe, the fund’s investment thesis and focus is very much a global one with a focus on verticals including fintech, health, mobility, data and cybersecurity. It has made 15 deals to date with a focus on growth-stage investments in startups such as emerging market-focused microinsurance company BIMA, Southeast Asian ride-hailing unicorn Go-Jek, U.S-based capital marketplace C2FO and European challenger bank N26.Allianz X, which initially began as an in-house incubation venture, is now looking to go after more of the same with its enlargened kitty but it also plans to get to work with its existing portfolio of companies.
Twitter is expanding the political campaigning policy and Ads Transparency Center it unveiled in the U.S. last August and last June, respectively, to European Union member states, India and Australia, mindful of key elections that are set for later this year.Fellow social network Facebook has taken similar steps, revealing last month that the political advertising rules and tools it introduced in the U.S. last May and in the U.K. last November were being extended to the EU, India, Nigeria and Ukraine.Enforcement of Twitter’s new policies in the EU, India and Australia will begin March 11, after which only certified advertisers can run political campaign ads on its network.Twitter said in a blog post that political advertisers in those nations should begin the application process for certification as soon as possible. In a separate blog post, Twitter director of public policy for Europe Karen White explained that ads endorsing parties or candidates will be viewable in Twitter’s Ads Transparency Center, which will provide information including billing information, ad spend, impressions data per tweet and demographic targeting data for the ads being served.Ads will remain in the Ads Transparency Center indefinitely, and they can be viewed by anyone, whether or not they have a Twitter account.
A fragment of a Neolithic skull discovered by a mudlark on the south bank of the Thames will go on display at the Museum of London.Dating from 3600BC, the skull is one of the earliest human finds to be made in the capital’s river.Only a small part of it – the frontal bone – was unearthed, but researchers think it belonged to a man over the age of 18.Radiocarbon dating commissioned by the Metropolitan Police revealed he probably died around 5,600 years ago.Dr Rebecca Redfern, curator of Human Osteology at the Museum of London, said: “This is an incredibly significant find and we’re so excited to be able to showcase it at the Museum of London.“The Thames is such a rich source of history for us and we are constantly learning from the finds that wash up on the foreshore.
We’ve known for a while that LG would reveal a 5G phone in early 2019, just like every other OEM apparently. What we didn’t know, or even suspect until late January was the name of the device: LG V50.Confirming a previous report from Korean media, Evan Blass just published a press render allegedly showing the Sprint version of the LG V50 ThinQ.It looks very legit, and there’s a few things worth talking about here.Considering the V40 is only a few months old, it’s possible that LG reused the platform for a new device. We can’t say we mind it, as in-display readers are still a little slower and less reliable than conventional designs.

“The JPM Coin is based on blockchain-based technology enabling the instantaneous transfer of payments between institutional accounts,” said an announcement based on gibberish-based grammar. In essence this seems to be a digital mechanism designed to speed up the movement of money within JP Morgan’s systems, nothing more. They gave the exclusive to CNBC, which also got to chat to Umar Farooq, head of JP Morgan’s blockchain projects, who likes to start his sentences with ‘so’.“So anything that currently exists in the world, as that moves onto the blockchain, this would be the payment leg for that transaction,” he said.“Money sloshes back and forth all over the world in a large enterprise. Is there a way to ensure that a subsidiary can represent cash on the balance sheet without having to actually wire it to the unit?

After nearly a decade of operation, NASA’s groundbreaking telescope ran out of fuel last year and was placed into permanent sleep on October 30.On September 25, the instrument captured one last image — a full view of the sky, tiled into a mosaic.Kepler has been instrumental in helping astronomers understand our galaxy, providing them with a wealth of data as it scanned the sky for Earth-size exoplanets near the habitable zone around stars.Over the past decade, Kepler collected 678GB of scientific data, documented 61 supernovae, and confirmed 2,662 planets, providing evidence for the publication of nearly 3,000 scientific papers. The telescope observed more than 530,500 stars in the Milky Way, many of which are accompanied by planets yet to be confirmed.“This full frame image is the last time Kepler took a picture of its entire field of view,” Jessie Dotson, a Kepler project scientist at NASA, told Digital Trends.

Time-shift television, a technology that allows people to watch TV shows they missed without presetting devices to record content, is becoming more widely available, giving those with the feature the opportunity and flexibility to view previously aired programs.A new study looked at whether this technology has affected how people watch TV.The study found that people with time-shift TV watched slightly more TV overall than they did before having the technology; they did not watch less live TV, and they did not watch fewer advertisements."Advertisers have been concerned that using time-shift TV would decrease the amount of time people spend watching live TV, which would reduce their exposure to ads," explains Pedro Ferreira, associate professor of information systems at Carnegie Mellon University's Heinz College of Information Systems and Public Policy, who coauthored the study. Some of the households were given premium TV channels, which included popular movies and shows without commercial breaks, for six weeks. In some of those households, consumers were also given access to time-shift TV, which allowed the researchers to observe the effect of the technology on consumers' consumption of TV.
Opera for Android now lets you buy cryptocurrency directly within your web browser, with the whole process taking less than a minute.Opera has embraced cryptocurrency with open arms, and added a built-in wallet to its Android and PC browsers late last year. Now it's teamed up with European Bitcoin exchange Safello to let Android users top up with Ethereum in just a few seconds. It's not as well know as Bitcoin, but Ethereum has several perks that make it a more tempting proposition.Perhaps most importantly, transfers can be processed much faster, which means it's more practical for mainstream use."We think that the next important phase for crypto will come from usage and that for it to reach wider adoption, it has to be easy to buy and easy to use," said Charles Hamel, product lead for crypto at Opera.
Following the launch of the Oppo K1 in the Chinese market, the company has finally decided to bring the product to India. One of the cheapest phones with an in-display fingerprint sensor, the brand is hoping to make a splash in India’s red hot mid-range segment. The phone’s design language doesn’t seem to stray far from other Oppo smartphones. The back of the phone employs a gradient style finish as is in vogue. The gold embellishment around the 16MP+2MP rear camera combo may come across as a bit garish to some though. The display has Gorilla Glass 5, which is good news if you’re in the habit of dropping your phone.

It seems Foxconn’s plans for a $10 billion Wisconsin plant are back on.After a couple of years of back and forths, the manufacturing giant says it’s recommitting to plans for a plant in the upper Midwest.A statement today cited a phone call between chairman/founder Terry Gou and Donald Trump.“After productive discussions between the White House and the company, and after a personal conversation between President Donald J. Trump and Chairman Terry Gou, Foxconn is moving forward with our planned construction of a Gen 6 fab facility, which will be at the heart of the Wisconsin Valley Science and Technology Park,” the statement reads.“This campus will serve both as an advanced manufacturing facility as well as a hub of high technology innovation for the region.”Earlier this week, the company noted that it was reconsidering its plans for the TV plant, noting that it was more interested in hiring researchers and engineers than the manufacturing jobs that were initially noted.
Nobel laureate Bob Solow pronounced 30 years ago that “you can see the computer age everywhere but in the productivity statistics”.The introduction of personal computers made high-powered computing available to all.Even the mention of AI strikes fear into many hearts. That is one way to boost productivity, but it’s hardly desirable.Rather, they have supplemented what employees do, enabling them to be more productive.Satya Ramswamy found that the most common use of AI and data analytics was in back-office functions, particularly IT, finance and accounting, where the processes were already at least partly automated.
