Frontrunners commonly face the challenge of maintaining their leads without knowing just how far ahead they are — an obstacle tackled, at their peril, by looking back at those behind them. Here’s a quick look at what you need to know before considering a purchase. It’s still an iPhone accessoryAs its name suggests, the Apple Watch is indeed a timepiece, but its primary value comes from tracking physical activities and displaying notifications from an iPhone. You can customize how it looks using a still too limited collection of Apple-designed watch faces, and navigate through apps using a tiny grid of icons.Unless Apple improves watchOS, it looks like you’ll have to avoid using Series 5’s new features to get Series 4-like battery results.

Felix "PewDiePie" Kjellberg said he was going to make a considerable donation to the Anti-Defamation League on Tuesday. Then on Thursday, he changed his mind.PewDiePie explained his decision to not donate $50,000 to the advocacy group in a video titled "My 100 Mil Award Broke" upload to YouTube on Thursday."I made a mistake of picking a charity that I was advised instead of picking a charity I am personally passionate about, which is 100% my fault," he said Thursday."This was not the right way to go about it.I knew it wasn't perfect but I also didn't know a lot that surfaced throughout this whole thing about the charity that doesn't fit at all."
Huawei is in a very difficult situation because of the US ban which apparently is creating so many problems for the Chinese company, so that according to a new report, the Huawei Mate X foldable smartphone will not be equipped with Google Apps.Nikkei has confirmed a report according to which the next Mate 30 Pro, which will be presented at mid-month, will not be supported by Google apps like Gmail, Maps and Play Store. In the same report, it is mentioned that even the company’s first foldable smartphone, Mate X, will not have support for Google apps. The foldable device was presented for the first time earlier this year and was recently delayed.Like the Samsung Galaxy Fold, to make further improvements.Currently, the Mate X should be shipped around November.
Volkswagen has announced a new way for vintage Beetle owners to convert their cars to battery electric power. The automaker is partnering with a German firm called eClassics that will actually perform the retrofits, while VW will provide the batteries and powertrain.VW says it’s already working on an electric conversion solution for vintage microbuses, too.Beyond that, “[a]n e-Porsche 356 could also be pursued in the future,” board member Thomas Schmall says. The German automaker says it’s even considering how it might use the modular MEB platform that will power many of its forthcoming electric cars in future conversions.Instead of mating new electric motors and batteries to the cars’ existing drivetrains, as many upstart retrofit shops do, VW is providing eClassics with a new single-speed powertrain borrowed from the automaker’s E-Up!
SpaceX is building and launching prototypes of Starship— a reusable launch system designed to send people to the moon and Mars — from Boca Chica, a site at the southern tip of Texas. When it got approval in July 2014, the rocket company said it'd build a commercial spaceport to launch Falcon 9 and Falcon Heavy rockets.Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.New FAA documents sent to Business Insider provide a glimpse into SpaceX's plan to develop a disruptive new rocket system over the next two to three years.Elon Musk, the company's founder and CEO, envisions the vehicle as a shiny steel two-stage launch system that may stand nearly 400 feet tall and reduce the cost of access to space by 100- to 1,000-fold by having fully reusable hardware.Business Insider was sent PDFs of the files (below) via email from an FAA spokesperson.
But with big players like Nintendo, Blizzard, Square Enix, Microsoft, and others expanding their mobile foothold, it can be hard for indie game developers to get their foot in the door.We spoke to indie game developer Sleeping Giant Games about its first mobile release Farm Punks, and how it managed to push through the crowd and find success on mobile platforms. The potential reach of mobile indie gamesAlthough this was the first mobile game Sleeping Giant Games had developed, the team behind Farm Punks wasn’t exactly new to the industry. They had previously developed a multiplayer game on Steam called Arrow Heads under the studio OddBird before shifting their focus to mobile and transitioning into Sleeping Giant.Mobile games already represent nearly half of the global games market, just about doubling revenue from PC games.
Lineage 2 has more than 30 million players and generated more than $1 billion in revenue, and that’s one reason why Netmarble is worth more than $6.5 billion in the stock market. The company has more than 4,000 developers, mostly in South Korea, and they’re focused on both original titles and licensed games.I spoke with Simon Sim, the president of Netmarble U.S., about the growth of mobile gaming, the use of licenses in mobile games, why the company chose to invest in the BTS K-pop group as it was going global. We spoke about the future of mobile games, big licenses, the aborted Nexon deal, mobile graphics quality, and cloud gaming at the GameDaily Connect event this week in Anaheim.Simon Sim: The topic was how we deal with IP, and how to meet the expectations of the fans of each IP.We need lots of human resources over there.
A group of scientists studying evidence preserved in cave formations have found that global sea levels were as much as 52 feet higher more than 3 million years ago than they are today.Their findings, based on an analysis of deposits from Arta Cave on the island of Mallorca, depict a time when Earth was two to three degrees Celsius warmer than in the pre-industrial era, and have implications for the study of current-day sea-level rise.Sea level rises as a result of melting ice sheets, but scientists have long worked to answer how fast and how much it could rise during a warming period."Constraining models for sea-level rise due to increased warming critically depends on actual measurements of past sea level," said senior research scientist Victor Polyak in a statement."This study provides very robust measurements of sea-level heights during the Pliocene."The project zeroed in on cave deposits that form in coastal caves at the "interface" between brackish water and cave air when the ancient spaces were flooded by rising seas.

Apple iOS 13 is shaping up to be an impressive update. It's set to deliver the world more diverse emoji, fixing the most cooked aspects of FaceTime as well as a much-needed dark mode. But Apple has committed a real doozy and released iOS 13.1 beta before the original has even been properly released to the public.Apple announced the iOS 13.1 beta is now out, which is great, but we haven't yet gotten an official release of iOS 13.It's expected that version will drop the same day as iPhone Day, which is rumoured to be September 10.Sure, the public iOS 13 beta has been out for awhile, but this still seems like a weird flex.
The U.S. Air Force’s secretive X-37B space plane this week broke its own record for time spent in low-Earth orbit — 718 days. Its previous record-breaking mission of 717 days ended in May 2017 when the vehicle touched down at the Kennedy Space Center’s Shuttle Landing Facility, Space.com reported. The current voyage, called Orbital Test Vehicle-5 (OTV-5), launched on a Space X Falcon 9 rocket in September 2017.Its missions are classified so the intended length of its stay in space hasn’t been made public.Indeed, not a great deal is known about the uncrewed X-37B beyond the limited information posted on the Air Force’s website. It’s described as “an experimental test program” that’s used for demonstrating various technologies “for a reliable, reusable, unmanned space test platform for the U.S. Air Force,” and has two primary objectives, namely to develop “reusable spacecraft technologies for America’s future in space, and operating experiments which can be returned to, and examined, on Earth.”

Previously, Huawei’s Mate 20 series devices used LG and China’s BOE screens. But this year’s Huawei Mate 30 series will no longer be supplied by the mentioned two manufacturers.According to Sina, the Huawei Mate 30 and Mate 30 Pro smartphones will use Samsung’s AMOLED display instead of the display panels produced by LG and BOE used in the Mate 20 series.Interestingly, earlier we heard that BOE intends to continue to supply display panels for the Mate 30 series. But it turns out Huawei has made its decision and chose Samsung as the screen supplier for the upcoming flagships.Huawei is still worried about the color and brightness of the Mate 20 Pro display panel.

Apple's physical, titanium Apple Card comes with its own set of cleaning and care instructions – seriously.Having just released its credit card in the US, Apple has published a support page for the Apple Card detailing how to clean and care for it.As it turns out, the Apple Card requires more TLC than the everyday credit card that lives in your wallet. In fact, Apple would prefer its titanium card to not live in your wallet at all – especially if it's leather, like most wallets.Apple's titanium Apple Card is actually coated in a white material, and apparently this material can be subject to stains and discoloration that, if untreated, may be irreversible.Again, this is a credit card we're talking about.

Once considered the most boring of topics, enterprise software is now getting infused with such energy that it is arguably the hottest space in tech.“Enterprise had become a dirty word, but there’s a resurgence going on and Enterprise doesn’t just mean big and slow anymore,” said JD Trask, co-founder of Raygun enterprise monitoring software. In advance of TechCrunch’s first enterprise-focused event, TC Sessions: Enterprise, The New Stack examined the commonalities between the numerous enterprise-focused companies who sponsor us.We’ll explore these topics in more depth at The New Stack pancake breakfast and podcast recording at TC Sessions: Enterprise.Traditional virtual machine infrastructure was originally designed to help manage server sprawl for systems-of-record software — not to scale out across a fabric of distributed nodes.CD has become a major category in cloud-native technologies, with companies such as CircleCI, CloudBees, Harness and Semaphore all finding their own ways to approach the problems enterprises face as they often struggle with the shift.
Did you know that the painter Rockwell Kent, whose splendorous Afternoon on the Sea, Monhegan hangs in San Francisco's de Young Museum, worked on murals and advertisements for General Electric and Rolls-Royce?Because the de Young's curators worked with Google to turn some of the informational placards that hang next to paintings into virtual launchpads, any placard that includes an icon for Google Lens—the name of the company's visual search software—is now a cue.(You can access Google Lens on the iPhone within the Google search app for iOS or within the native camera app on Android phones.)Aim your camera at a dot drawing of a bee in the Osher Sculpture Garden and a quirky video created by artist Ana Prvacki plays—she attempts to pollinate flowers herself with a bizarrely decorated gardening glove. And smartphones and tablets were disapproved of in classrooms.Using Google Lens in its current form in a museum, I discovered, requires a lot of looking up, looking down, looking up, looking down.
Xiaomi's foldable smartphone gets new renders based on a new patent application and it looks pretty swish. The president of the company, Lin Bin, posted a video of the Xiaomi's folding phone on Chinese social network Weibo back in January, and a second video of the handset in March.A new patent application with the European Union Intellectual Property Office has spilled the beans on a few more features including a triple rear camera in a vertical formation. There doesn't appear to be a cutout for the front-facing camera, leading us to speculate that the phone could be utilising the company's under-display camera that it unveiled in June. There's not a great deal of official information out on the handset right now, but with Samsung and Huawei getting ready to their own foldables onto the market, it looks like everyone will be hopping onto the bandwagon before long.
