Google has finally rolled out its Augmented Reality (AR) navigation feature for Google Maps for Android and Apple phones.
The feature, currently launched in beta mode was showcased at the Google I/O event last year and launched for Pixel phones at the Google I/O 2019.
The new feature is expected to make walking navigation better.
Currently, GPS pins users' location on the map, but it does not accurately determine the direction which a user is facing.
The Live View feature will make better use of a phone's built-in compass.
Earlier today Google Maps announced a new redesign for the app on Android and iPhone.
New updates will begin rolling out now.
It also feature a new logo for the app itself.
Users will get new upgrades for public transit and augmented reality in March as per various reports.
The AR feature in Google Maps that Google first demoed more than a year ago — a heads-up mode called Live View that provides directions from phones’ cameras in real time — will roll out in beta in the coming weeks for compatible iOS and Android devices, the company today announced.
Live View was previously only available to users who were enrolled in the Google Maps beta and were level 5 or above in Google’s Local Guides program, and to owners of Pixel 3a, Pixel 3a XL, and older Pixel smartphones.
As before, Live View will require an ARCore- and ARKit-supported smartphone and will only work in countries where Google Street View is available.
Google also warns that Live View will slightly increase Maps’ battery and cellular data consumption.
Tapping the Start AR button kicks off Live View navigation, and holding up the phone reveals arrows, indicators, and a live map that guides you to your final destination.
Using a technique known as global localization, Maps gets a phone’s coarse location via GPS, and it uses Street View imagery to narrow down the exact location.
Updating itself with the neck to neck competition with Apple, Google has launched a developer preview for ARCore, while Apple is soon to release its AR Kit.
You can only access the ARCore services, once you’ve installed Google’s ARService and APK installer.
The ARCore will run on Pixel smartphones running the Nougat version and not the latest Oreo version.
The $32.7 billion search giant, will be collaborating with several handsets including LG, Huawei, Asus and Samsung.
Though, the kit only responds to planes and not human face, people are nevertheless having a lot of fun placing things in places that are humanly impossible.
Finally, it’ll further feature light- sensing ability that gives virtual objects, shadows and relative fit to their surroundings.
Google’s Android game is getting bigger and better each day.
The scope of development with ARCore with a perfect blend of Android technology is immensely great.
Although Google has some plans to include the technique in other mobile app development domains too, but it is under the research for now.
Google has succeeded in bringing a glimpse of the similar Android Technology under its flagship pixel phones running on Oreo.
Google’s head (Clay Bavor) managing AR and VR projects for the search giant quoted, “Our goal for this is to take AR mainstream.
We have believed for years that mobile-based AR was going to be a thing.” ARCore will probably be in preview mode until winter”, he added further.
