The Aphrodite Project

Aphrodite Cyprus project is one of the latest adventures for Cyprus in gas monetization. Project Aphrodite is a natural gas field located off of the southern coast of this country, in Cyprus’ maritime Exclusive Economic Zone. Aphrodite gas field is located 34 km west of the Leviathan gas field in Israel. There was some difficulty getting this project off the ground, but this country has finally found a way to start the exploration process of getting their natural gas into the market. This is happening 7 years after they initially discovered natural gas in this zone.

Since the discovery in Block 12, there have been two more discoveries at Block 6 and Block 10. The Energy Minister Yiorgos Lakkotrypis was talking about this discovery, mentioning that the Block 10 reservoir is of good quality with a high recoverability potential. He was very optimistic about the discoveries and the hopes to find more. There is great potential for monetization, with the current plan is to be exported by pipeline to Egypt. Before making any real decisions, there are a variety of different perimeters that need to be considered. Once everything has been considered, they will determine the future plans for this site.

While there are several options under consideration, one of the first things that will take place is the construction of an LNG plant. After the Aphrodite gas field was discovered, there was a master plan created and a plant site was prepared in anticipation for the future. However, due to the limited discoveries these plans were considered to be “commercially unviable”. Another option is exporting the gas to Egypt due to the demand for natural gas in the Egyptian market. With this plan, the liquefication process will take place in one or two LNG plants in Damietta and Idku. Then there is the possibility of a floating LNG plant.

The final option is a pipeline to Europe. Using the East Med Gas Pipeline project, the Aphrodite gas field natural gas can be transported to Northern European markets. There has been a decline in the energy supply in Europe, which means that Cyprus can take advantage of this to monetize the Aphrodite gas field.

These are all great ideas to consider, but it is widely believed that Cyprus should go ahead and develop their own LNG. The longer that they wait, the harder this process becomes. The government has approved the process of developing the proposed LNG plant Vasilikos on the southern coast. This will be the dedicated energy port. However, this won’t be ready until 2023. Experts say that there needs to be a viable short-term solution.

Assessing the needs of the industry and finding out exactly what the Aphrodite gas field has to offer are important considerations for the future of this project. These issues must be addressed if this project will see success in the future. The Aphrodite gas field has overcome a difficult past and has the potential to have quite the future ahead of it.
