Virginia's First Powerball Jackpot Win

Dave and Nancy Honeywell of Fredericksburg,  Va., are identified as the lucky recipients of the second-largest jackpot ever won in Virginia in 2013 in a Powerball drawing. Dave just spent. He let the computer choose his numbers as he picked up a lottery ticket before flying out of Richmond International Airport on a business trip. The Honeywells are employed with the Department of Defense, where Dave is a computer scientist and his wife, Nancy, is a project manager.

Four days later, Honeywell learned that he has the lucky numbers. The Powerball Va. winning numbers that led to their win were 5, 27, 36, 38 and 41 - plus the Powerball, 12. The Honeywells were the recipients of the winning $217 million Powerball ticket. They opted to accept the one-time cash option worth $136.4 million before taxes, as opposed to receiving the full jackpot (minus taxes) in 30 annual payments. The Virginia Lottery Executive Director Paula stated, "We're delighted to present the second-largest prize ever awarded by the Virginia Lottery to Dave and Nancy Honeywell”, first being the 2004 Mega Millions drawing.

All our fears are gone now, said Honeywell to exhibit emotions. They confidently stood in front of a throng of cameras and onlookers near the airport machine that gave them the golden ticket. They stated, “So we feel much better.”

The Honeywells planned to purchase their very first car and a nice place to retire out west and travel. Most importantly, Virginia couple donated  $4 million to the Community Foundation of the Rappahannock River Region. The money is invested in the food bank and Habitat for Humanity for public welfare.

It’s easy-peasy to become the next Powerball winner. It just costs $2 per play. For each play, you have to select five distinct numbers from a set of 69 white balls and one number from 26 red ‘Powerballs’. The number of ‘Powerball’ ball can be the same as one of the first five numbers because it is drawn from a separate number pool from the first five numbers. The winning numbers are selected using two ball machines: one containing the white balls and the other containing the red Powerballs. The machine with 5 white balls draws 5 whites whereas the other machine draws 1 red Powerball that is a total of 6 balls. For the machining of your lottery numbers, you should have at least 3 white balls and 1 red ball, the same as the draw, to win.

The Powerball Lottery Jackpot starts at $40 million and grows by a minimum of $10 million each time a drawing has no jackpot winners.
