What are the symptoms of stage 1 kidney disease?

CKD does not progress all of a sudden instead in stages, and each stage has its own signs and aftermaths. The stages of kidney disease are based on how well the kidneys can excrete waste and extra fluid out of the bloodstream. In the early stages, the kidneys still work to fulfill the body's requirement, but they need to push themselves more to get rid of waste in the later ones. Eventually, their weakness exceeds their work, and they fail.

The doctors determine GFR to gauge kidney function. The glomerular filtration rate is a parameter based on your blood test for creatinine, a kind of waste product in our blood. Based on GFR can be calculated the stage of CKD. Altogether, there are five stages of CKD, starting from stage 1 to end-stage renal disease which is the fifth stage. When the doctor knows which stage of kidney disease you are in they can provide the best treatment suited to that particular stage as for each stage there are different tests and treatment.

These stages are classified as:

  • Stage 1 with normal or high GFR (GFR > 90 mL/min)
  • Stage 2 Mild CKD (GFR = 60-89 mL/min)
  • Stage 3A Moderate CKD (GFR = 45-59 mL/min)
  • Stage 3B Moderate CKD (GFR = 30-44 mL/min)
  • Stage 4 Severe CKD (GFR = 15-29 mL/min)
  • Stage 5 End Stage CKD (GFR <15 mL/min)

What if you are in stage1 CKD?

A person with stage 1 CKD has kidney damage near to normal. Glomerular filtration rate also stays at an average level or maybe even higher than 90 ml/min. The kidney’s remain functional even if they are not well. One of the reasons they are referred to as silent killers is that they are at your rescue until the end and show no signs. No other organ has the capacity to perform their task if their functionality is disturbed, but kidneys do maybe because they are in pairs.

What are the symptoms of stage1 CKD?

Most people with stage1 CKD may not know about it. Even if they do, it is because they were being tested for other chronic conditions such as diabetes and high blood pressure.

Signs that may help discover CKD include:

  • Higher than normal creatinine or urea levels in the blood
  • Protein in the urine (can be seen through foam in the urine)
  • Loss of appetite
  • Fluid retention, swelling of extremities
  • Shortness of breath
  • Kidney pain
  • Sleep problems due to restless legs
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Metallic taste in the mouth
  • Bad breath due to urea buildup in the blood
  • Having trouble doing everyday things
  • Numbness or tingling in the toes or fingers

Evidence of CKD in stage 1 can be done through MRI, CT scan, and X-ray. Sometimes, the doctor needs to learn about your family history of chronic kidney disease to understand CKD instances in you. In extreme cases, a kidney biopsy is also done to know the exact cause behind it.

Stage 1 CKD treatment

Regular testing with the help of blood and urine tests will show whether your kidney disease is progressing. Adopting a bunch of preventive measures and lifestyle changes can help slow the progression of kidney disease.

Having a healthy diet will help to resolve some of the issues and prevent a burden on the kidneys. Eat a renal friendly diet only after the dietician’s recommendations which may include:

  • Fresh fruits and vegetables
  • Only a limited variety of grains
  • Low saturated fat and cholesterol level and limited total fats
  • Limit intake of refined and processed foods
  • Less salt and sugar
  • Low sodium foods
  • Avoid canned and stored foods
  • Restricted amount of protein as recommended
  • Dietician’s recommended amount of vitamins and minerals
  • Little or no phosphorus and potassium content in the food

Lifestyle measures

  1. Keep blood pressure at healthy levels
  • If you are a diabetic, ideal BP for you is 125/75
  • 130/85 for non diabetes and non proteinuria
  • 125/75, if you are non diabetic and have proteinuria
  1. Keep blood sugar level in control.
  2. Monitor your kidney disease progression and go for regular checkups.
  3. Do yoga.
  4. Stop smoking and alcohol.
  5. Do mindful activities that enjoy the most.
  6. Take adequate sleep.
  7. Avoid painkillers and other NSAIDs.

Ayurvedic treatment

With Ayurveda, it is possible to recover kidney function with the use of herbs and spices. No allopathic treatment swears permanent recovery like Ayurveda does.

The use of top-notch herbs and spices ensures permanent recovery in terms of the blood filtration process. Only correct treatment and lifestyle changes can help keep a person healthy with improved renal sufficiency.

If any of your family members or you are in stage 1 CKD, let us know. We will customize ayurvedic medications and a diet plan so that your kidney function returns like usual.

Disclaimer:  Do not depend on signs solely to figure out deviation in the case of kidneys. Get yourself tested and know.
