Can Music Help Us Get High?

Have you ever been stumped by a musical piece or plant that played on a breeze? Did you know that music and plants go hand in hand? In fact, research has shown that certain plants and certain types of music can have healing effects on our bodies. The healing properties of some plants could even be directly related to their roots. Let's learn more about the relationship between music and nature.

We have known for a long time that certain sounds and pitches evoke certain emotions in us. The same goes for the sounds and pitches of plants. Scientists now say that certain frequencies and vibrations that are produced by certain plants can affect our bodies in much the same way as classical music does. But surprisingly, the most obvious positive effects came from classical music specifically for plants. Researchers found that the best musical pieces evoked feelings of happiness, soothing relaxation, and even euphoria in people who listened to record label.

When I was growing up, my favorite band was The Rolling Stones. Ever since I could remember, I would hear their songs in my head when I would wake up in the early morning. When it came to healing my sick pet, the one thing that I really wanted to do was roll another stone around its roots -- in this case, a sick pet remedy called Roll-A-Page.

I can't exactly pinpoint the moment when I told Rolling Stone's manager that I wanted to get high and write a song about him; I don't think I actually said "Get high and write a song about him." What I did say was, "Cannabis! I want to write a song about a good Canadian weed that makes me feel good." That was in 1980, before the whole "weed" thing was a thing of the past. So what does any of this have to do with music and how can cannabis help your songs?

As it turns out, I did tell Rolling Stone's manager that I wanted to get high and write a song about him. I think this is what got us into our current state of awareness. While I wouldn't go as far as to say that marijuana was responsible for my favorite band's stupor, I will say that marijuana was a big part of our mutual admiration for each other. As much as I think that Bob Dylan is a genius and millions of people are crazy about his work, I wouldn't say that he's got the greatest imagination in the world either. We all have basic instincts and if we're lucky, they lead us to reaching enlightenment.

In regards to marijuana and music, I think that what we find ourselves wrapped up in is our emotional awareness. When I'm thinking about this issue, I think about the amazing song by Eric Clapton, "Mr. Tambourine man." This song begins with a slow, gliding rhythm and then goes into an explosive solo that puts the listener under a spell. It makes me think of my favorite philosophical songs from the Classical period. That's because they make me think about the things that are important to me, whether it's about my family or my own personal life.

I also think about the fact that when I listen to that Eric Clapton song, I can picture my own family gathered around the campfire, as well as my own father sitting beside me, smoking pot and rolling a good time. Now don't get me wrong, I'm not suggesting that anyone start smoking cannabis right away and become a drug addict. What I am trying to say is that when you hear something like that, it makes you want to roll another blunt and experience life the way it was meant to be lived. The best example of this comes from the bible. Paul, among other apostles, smoked pot to heighten his spiritual experiences.

It has also been argued by some that classical music and cannabis go hand in hand because certain sounds waves through our bodies when we hear them. Our brains then translate those sound waves as "orgasms" or "buzzes". And just like the musical notes that being able to cross our lips and out of our mouths, certain sound waves can also be able to penetrate our bodies. Some have gone as far as saying that when we listen to classical music, we can better appreciate the sounds of nature. And who knows, maybe the sound waves are also helping our bodies relax and get in a state of meditation.
