Pharmaceutical Contract Packaging Makes Serialization Easy

Pharmaceutical contract packaging, or the practice of pharmaceutical companies outsourcing their packaging procedures, has many advantages. One advantage of pharmaceutical contract packaging is that it makes complying with pharmaceutical serialization requirements easier for pharmaceutical companies.

Pharmaceutical serialization is the process of assigning a unique identifier in the form of a serial number to every sealable unit of every prescription product that is manufactured. A serial number provides a wide range of information about a product, including the product’s origin, expiration date, batch number, and national drug code.

In 2013, the FDA passed the Drug Quality Security Act, which tightened pharmaceutical serialization regulations. The main goal of requiring pharmaceutical serialization is to prevent the production and sale of counterfeit drugs. While for this reason, pharmaceutical serialization is certainly important, it also makes the process of pharmaceutical packaging a lot more difficult.

When faced with the new pharmaceutical serialization requirements, many pharmaceutical companies that handled their own packaging in-house ended up struggling. Implementing serialization procedures is time consuming and complicated. Fortunately for the pharmaceutical companies, pharmaceutical contract packaging provided a solution to the problem.

A lot of dedicated packaging companies that handle pharmaceutical contract packaging had already been working to implement serialization procedures for years before the requirements became more stringent, so they were able to step up and meet the new serialization requirements without too much of a struggle. As a result, even more pharmaceutical companies started to phase out their in-house packaging operations and start seeking out pharmaceutical contract packaging

Pharmaceutical contract packaging has proven to be a very useful service for pharmaceutical companies all over the United States. This has been particularly true since the passage of the Drug Quality Security Act in 2013 strengthened pharmaceutical serialization requirements. Pharmaceutical packaging companies handle pharmaceutical serialization so that pharmaceutical companies can focus their efforts on drug research and development.
