Technological Trends in Construction Industry

Improvement is a continuous process. Like every other industry in the world, the construction sector is also evolving fast. Innovations to increase efficiency, productivity and safety are coming up every day, and organizations across the world are adopting them to their advantage.

We have listed here a few landmark technological developments that have positively impacted the construction sector in the recent past.

a) Augmented Reality (AR)

AR is a digital layer of information that can be used by a construction professional to automate measurements, have real-time safety information, visualize potential changes, and much more. A tablet or a portable computer pointed at a wall can display the building plan for the wall. It’s so simple! Experts say that AR glasses will be available in the near future, which will make things even easier. People will be able to have hands-free access to all crucial information and use them.

b) Smart Construction Wearables

Construction is one of the riskiest industries to work in. Safety is of utmost importance in a construction site. Smart wearables like smart boots, smart hats, power gloves have features that can keep the workmen extremely safe. Apart from these portable wearables, there are construction exoskeletons that make strenuous jobs easier and bring down the risks to a large extent.

c) Construction Robots

Though not used extensively yet, construction robots are sure to gain popularity for reducing human intervention in repetitive activities.

d) Drones

Drones have entered the construction industry and made life easier for all. They have started to play significant roles in inspections, mapping, security activities, etc., and have reduced the operation cost quite a lot.

e) Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML)

Both AI and Machine Learning have revolutionized the construction industry. While AI has made it possible to make decisions independent of human intervention, ML has reshaped design, security and also helped in cost reduction on the basis of past data analysis.

f) Modular Construction

Modular construction is gaining pace in construction day by day. Structures are constructed off-site and assembled at the site. This reduces construction time and construction waste. It also has positive impacts on carbon emissions.

g) 3D Printing

3D Printing, though in its infancy, is sure to be a regular feature soon. Entire structures can be printed using this method, eliminating errors, increasing work speed, and enabling efficient material use.

h) Building Information Modeling (BIM)

BIM creates the digital representation of a structure before building it. The accurate representation enables all the involved personnel to envisage difficulties, eliminate risks, determine the logistics and increase efficiency. Useful in every stage of construction, it has revolutionized the processes of construction to a large extent.

Adopting the latest technologies completely will be tough and time-consuming. But once done, the industry is going to benefit immensely. So will be the end-users.
