Kite Surfing: The Ultimate "Green" Sport

It seems like everyone wants to go "green" these days and the trend is even extending to the arena of water sports. Kite surfing is the ultimate green recreational activity since it harnesses the natural power of the wind instead of using gas-guzzling motorboats or wave runners for propulsion. This water-based phenomenon is "taking off" all over the country and the skills needed are relatively easy to learn. Here's a quick overview.

Power kites used to pull sportsmen on water, snow and even land are not a new idea of wing foil kite; but better construction and safety technologies in kite construction have allowed kite surfing to go mainstream. In a nutshell, all you need is a kite, harness, board and surfing medium and you've got an afternoon of fun!

Kites come in inflatable as well as foil models and come in a variety of shapes, sizes and configurations. The type you need on any given day depends greatly on wind conditions. The lines, harnesses and leashes you choose will also depend on your surfing style as well as personal preference. Boards for kite surfing come in three basic designs: surf-style, wake-style and twintip. There really is no "right or wrong" in choosing equipment: so much depends on your own surfing style as well as water and wind conditions.

Kite surfing makes an ideal cross-over sport for surfers, wakeboarders and snowboarders: if you are interested in giving this "green" sport a try, first do some research on a website dedicated to educating and equipping newcomers. It's good to know as much as you can before you soar!
