A Progressing Cavity Pump is a positive displacement pump that is mostly used for high-viscous fluids and difficult pumping applications. They are also referred to as cavity pumps, progressing cavity pumps, PC Pumps, progg cavity pumps, progressive cavity screw pumps, and eccentric screw pumps. The pump is characterised as a progressive cavity pump because it transfers fluids by moving fixed discrete cavities through the pump as the rotor revolves. It is a versatile pump with numerous uses for dealing with abrasive, high-viscous fluids.


A Progressing Cavity Pump (PCP) is a type of positive displacement pump that can handle a variety of fluids with high viscosity, abrasiveness, and solids content. It is also known as a screw pump, eccentric screw pump, or Moineau pump. The PCP consists of two main components: a helical rotor and a stator. The rotor is a single helical screw that rotates inside the stator, which has a double helix configuration. The rotor and stator are designed to form a series of sealed cavities that move the fluid from the inlet to the outlet of the pump. 



A helical rotor and a double helix stator make up Progressing Cavity Pump. The pumping fluid is introduced into the pump via the intake suction nozzle. The fluid is then directed into a lengthy casing that houses the helical rotor and stator assembly. When the rotor revolves and makes contact with the stator surface, a series of tiny cavities form in between. The pumping fluid flows through these chambers before being discharged through the outlet. The main source of fluid transport is the sealed cavities.


Progressing Cavity Pump should not be operated empty since the heat generated by the rotor and stator can cause the pump to fail. These are self-priming pumps with high suction lift and higher pressure each stage. René Moineau, an aviation pioneer, invented the working theory of progressive cavity pumps in 1930
