The Good, The Bad and The Ugly Side of Heavy Spring Rain

Spring Rain

Spring rain is much needed during most parts of the world for the plants and trees to sprout into life and bring in a change of season. It serves as a renewal of resources and environment and is considered as a blessing. Most of the spring rains are mild and cause little damage to properties.

Heavy Spring Rain

But sometimes when heavy spring rains come, they cause more damage than benefit. Heavy spring rain usually occur due to a multitude of reasons – such as extreme weather conditions due to global warming and El Niño, seasonal changes, and low-lying topography of many areas. Heavy spring rains can last for a day or two and have increased in the recent years.

Issues Caused by Heavy Spring Rain

Heavy spring rain can cause numerous issues for homeowners that can be both seen and unseen. The first impact of heavy spring rain is the water level rising in rivers and canals making them overflow and causing flooding. Flooding can lead to physical damage to properties and can even injure people. It can damage your car, ruin your garden, ruin the pathways and backyards, and cause severe damages to the furniture inside your home. Homeowners also have to pay a hefty amount to take cleaning and repair services due to the damage caused by flooding because the aftermath of heavy rains becomes an expensive affair. So, it is important that homeowners take appropriate precautions to protect their assets and property whenever it is expected to rain heavily.

Apart from physical damage, heavy rains also lead to unseen and unstated damage, such as mold and mildew infestations. Moisture seeping into your living space can cause walls and surfaces to succumb to mold and mildew due to extra moisture trapped in the air and walls of your house. They can cause health issues like allergies, asthma, rashes and other ailments and can damage property too.

Heavy rains can also cause problems in areas with poor drainage systems as stagnant water can breed mosquitoes and other insects. This can lead to an increase in disease-carrying mosquitoes and cause property damages.

Precautions to Take

In order to proactively protect ourselves from the adverse effects of heavy spring rain, homeowners, who live in an area where heavy rain is expected at least once a year, should take proper steps to protect their investments and safety:

- Create a budget surplus by putting away a part of the income into a rainy day fund as these funds come handy when a homeowner has to pay for damages caused by heavy spring rain.

- Trim trees and their branches so that they don’t break off and cause possibilities of property damage or injury.

- Check for any leaks in the roof, pipes and walls and get them fixed before the onset of rain.

- Increase the capacity of water storage tanks and purchase extra drums, buckets and tubs in order to store and divert rainwater from buildings.

- Invest in overflow drains and fit them in yards and gardens as a backup for heavy spring rains.

- Install security cameras around the property and other electronic devices that might be damaged by rain or flooding.

- Raise furniture, electronics and other items that are normally on the floor to protect them against flooding.

- Install a sump pump to quickly remove any water that may accumulate in low-lying areas.

Heavy spring rains can cause much destruction and debris in its wake but with proper planning and preparation, you can reduce the damage caused by it significantly. It is also important to keep a lookout for any sign of abnormal levels of rain and try to stay as much prepared as possible so that your family and property can remain safe and secure.
