Tip #1: Start with the Right Speakers

Want to have great sound? Don’t purchase the first speaker you spot on the shelf. Not all speakers are created equal, and depending on your sound priorities some research needs to be involved to make the best decision.

For theater sound, you’re probably going to want something that supports a stronger bass for sound that you can feel. Surround sound is also a consideration if you’re in search of a truly immersive sound.

Consider the size of your room when choosing the output of the speakers you’ll be selecting. The more power, the larger the room the sound will support.

If music is your #1 priority, consider the streaming services and music inputs that the speakers support. Check for USB, AUX, wireless and Bluetooth capabilities and verify that your preferences are supported by the system.

Consider what you’ll be primarily using the sound for (TV, movies, music). Some speakers have pre-programmed settings that let you swap the optimization settings depending on what you’re listing to, others don’t. If your eyes are keen to notice subtle differences, this could make or break your listening experience, this leads us to tip #2.

Tip #2: Don’t Ignore your Speaker Settings

Speaker settings are often overlooked as one more unnecessary step to getting your home system set-up and running. Don’t make that mistake. If your home speaker system supports custom control, adjust the bass, treble and other sound preferences until your ears are sounding with delight. Don’t really know what you’re doing? That’s ok. Pre-programmed settings are there for a reason.

Many leading speaker manufactures have built-in sound settings so you can automatically adjust the sound output based on your listening activities. The HEOS multi room speaker system allows users to swap preferences for TV, Movies, Quiet Settings, Music and more with a swipe on their app.

Tip #3: Place your Speakers Strategically

While this especially applies to multi-speaker surround sound systems, speaker placement regardless of number can greatly affect how a listener perceives sound. Since sound emits as waves, the path should be unobstructed. Speakers should face in towards the listening area. Yes, this means you need to move your surround sound speakers out from behind your couch where they’re hidden.

If the obvious placement of speakers bothers you, consider a less evasive solution like a soundbar that won’t consume your living area.

Consider the height of your ears when in the standard listening position. The speaker(s) should be placed at a similar level for optimal sound.

Tip #4: Make your Space Sound-Friendly

Since sound is essentially waves, they are absorbed easily into soft or plush surfaces. Sound bad? Wrong. Once the waves reach the full distance of your space (such as the wall or a floor) they may reverberate off of hard or smooth surfaces, distorting the sound.

Instead, the sound should be contained after it reaches its full distance. Heavy drapes or curtains and a plush rug are the right steps to get you there.

Tip #5: Play High Resolution Sound Files

Didn’t know resolution and sound were in the same category? Here’s some news for you. High-resolution sound is the latest trend in the audio industry. Also known as loss-less sound, the newly release file types are just that. Whereas older music file types (such as MP3 or CD) loose sound in translation from recording to the saving of the file, lossless high resolution sound maintains a near pure sound, so listeners can enjoy sound the way it was meant to be heard.

If you want to be a part of the new trend, make sure your new speaker system supports these file types. Since it’s a new technology, it’s not everywhere yet, but rest assured the leaders in the industry will be producing a mass quantity of supporting systems in years to come.

Follow these tips and you may start enjoying a whole new experience directly from the comfort of your home. Whether a single output or a multi room speaker system, set up is key, and choosing the right speaker and setup can help you get the most out of your home audio system.
