Not Enough OLED Screens for All Apple Devices Next Year?

Even though we’ve got about nine months until the new iPhone 8 is launched, the device has seen a lot of rumors over the past few months. The year 2017 is apparently going to be the year for edge-to-edge displays, as both the Galaxy S8 and iPhone 8 have shared similar information. However, rather than launching just the two customary variants since the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, Apple will launch three. The revolutionary smartphone will mark its ten year anniversary, so it seems that 2017 will be monumental for iPhone users.

OLED Panel

Whatever the speculations and predictions may be, most industry sources agree on one thing – one of its best features will be an OLED panel, which will be applied to one of the three iPhone 8 variants. Apple reportedly made an order for 100 million OLED panels from Samsung, which testifies that the company is ready to actually go through with the idea that has been a long time coming. The new OLED panel should provide iPhone lovers with better contrast, sharper images, more saturated colors and improved battery life.

Needs vs. Supplies

According to certain claims from different sources, the Wall Street Journal also spoke on the subject by saying how there are not enough suppliers to equip the whole new iPhone lineup with OLED panels. Because of that, the entire lineup will not have upgraded displays before 2018, which will provide Apple with enough time to smooth out any other upgrades alongside organic displays (OLED is the technology that utilizes an organic compound that emits light in response to an electric current).

Out of all small screen OLED suppliers, Samsung is the one that will probably supply them, because it is the only company capable of producing the majority of the panels that Apple demands. Sharp, LG and Japan display are looking to catch up, but Samsung is still the leading small screen OLED supplier. The Korean tech giant is the only one that will be able to fulfill Apple’s demands, still, only to a limited level. Foxconn and Sharp are investing in the development and production of OLED panels, but it will not bear fruit until 2018.

iPhone 8 Upgrades

Before the iPhone wholeheartedly adopts OLED, there’s still a lot to wait. But the next year’s lineup will still have a unique set of upgrades. Glass build, a virtual home button, edge-to-edge displays and 10nm processes are speculated to be under development. It’s the devices 10th anniversary, so while Apple has waited a long time to significantly upgrade its most known devices, it seems that this moment is just right for making important changes that would be remembered in the device’s contemporary history.

Hopefully, more details will surface, given that we have a lot of waiting ahead of us until September 2017. Wall Street Journal confirms that the OLED technology is most likely here to stay, and iPhone lovers can expect its broader availability in 2018, when the complete switch to OLED will occur.
