Biggest Interior Design Trends of 2017

Another year has passed and it’s out with the old and in with the new when it comes to interior design. This year has seen a revival in bold colors and patterns. There was also a push for renewal, where old items found use in unusual spaces. Materials were a big focus with an increased leaning to things that are soft and comforting. Here is a breakdown of a few of the biggest trends seen this year:

Color

Ever since Pantone named Greenery as the color of the year, it has been appearing in various forms throughout interior design. The company says they were inspired with a push to get back to nature. The color green also brings to mind the idea of new beginnings. This color is often used as a bold statement from an otherwise all-white or beige interior. Homeowners might hire an interior home painter to incorporate it with a green couch in the living room, green in their bedroom curtains or as the tile color in a shower.

This year has seen a new appreciation for dark moody colors such as navy or a soft grey. These colors pair well with wood or leather, and they are recommended for an office space or reading room.

Copper metals and polished brass used to be all the rage, but now the trend is shifting toward items with a black finish. This color often pops up on light fixtures, faucets and kitchen appliances. They especially pair well with the usual all-white appearance of the bathroom.

Furniture

Texture has played a big role in furniture this year. The focus has been on items that inspire comfort, such as a velvet armchair. Velvet pieces work well in spaces that have rough natural textures. It’s easy to incorporate the trend on a smaller basis as well through a velvet pillow or throw.

American designers have put their full support behind the Danish concept of “hygge,” pronounced hoo-gah. The word translates closely to “cozy” but the concept is about creating joy and comfort in the everyday moments of life. This is seen in design through the resurgence of quilts as part of the bedspread. Living rooms are also seeing an increase in the amount of soft pillows and throws on chairs.

This year has been big for Americana or vintage-inspired pieces. Instead of standard factory-line furniture, homeowners are turning toward items that have a little more character and craftsmanship. Many kitchens are seeing the addition of wooden tables and handmade silverware. In addition, old dressers and cabinets are being transformed into unique vanity pieces in the bathroom.

Accessories

Minimalism lasted for several seasons, but the trend is on its way out. Instead, maximalism is taking its place. This has shown up in design through the mixing of different styles and designs. Old items are thrown in along newer items, often with a similar color to pull everything together. People are also experimenting more with bold wallpaper patterns to spice up an otherwise plain room.

A big trend for this year is adding items to the home that are unique to the homeowner. To get the “curated look” try and find things that stand out at the local flea market. Or bring something home from an international trip. People are encouraged to display their collections, whether they may be a series of skateboards or a framing of sea shells. Anything works as long as it appeals to the individual personality.

Bedding has become a new way to bring personality into the room. This year has seen new experimentation with patterns. Bright red is showing up on comforters and pillows. Instead of the standard headboard, homeowners are experimenting with different patterns and textures. Windows and skylights are also becoming another way for people to get in touch with nature on a daily basis.
