So you’re building your dream kitchen–congrats! While the task can seem daunting, there are steps to take for a seamless remodel. Whether you’re doing-it-yourself or hiring professional help, here are five tips for executing (and surviving) a kitchen renovation.

One - Think Function First

Nothing will drive up your expenses more than knocking down walls and changing the location of the plumbing and electrical outlets. This is also where unforeseen problems can arise. Work with the style of your home, otherwise you’ll end up with a kitchen that looks like it belongs in someone else’s home. Plus, you’ll save big on demolition and reconstruction costs, which can go towards other expenses.

Two - Know Your Trends

It’s easy to get overwhelmed (and carried away) when remodeling your home. To avoid this, stay on top of trends and improvements in the kitchen world so you can make the most informed decision for your lifestyle. Some eye-catching appliances can seem like good choices, but by doing the research you may find a less expensive, more eco-friendly version of the same thing. Focus on your budget and put your money towards long-term investments like cabinets, countertops and products that combine low maintenance with long warranty timelines.

Three - Cabinets

Cabinets are essential to the functionality of almost every kitchen, but they also determine the look and feel. So use your remodel as an opportunity to show off your personal style and taste! White is one of the most timeless kitchen cabinet colors–it’s bright and welcoming, making any space feel more spacious. They also match well with hardware, appliances, and almost any decor. Darker tones and gray can also offer versatility, it really goes back to personal preference. If you’re getting new cabinets and want to keep your old appliances, leave enough space for the future if you do decide to get a large model later. Utilize the small extra space with creativity, like installing a floor-to-ceiling wine rack. It will look built-in and intentional. Plus, don’t forget about lower cabinets too–deep drawers are perfect for pots and pans, or even garbage and recycling.

Four - Let There Be Light

Lighting can drastically change the appearance of your kitchen in the best way possible. Depending on where you add light fixtures, they can make your kitchen look larger and brighter, and in some cases, it will help you work more safely and efficiently. The two types of lighting you should have in your kitchen are task lighting and ambient lighting. Task lighting should be on your must-have list, since overhead cabinets can create dark work areas. Eliminate this problem with under-cabinet lighting. Pendant lights are great for islands or countertops without low-hanging cabinets. And recessed lights work well over sinks and general work areas with no cabinets hanging above. Ambient lighting includes any additional features, such as decorative ceiling mounts and wall sconces.

Five - Storage

Storage is one thing that will never go out of style in a home. If you’re sticking with the same kitchen footprint though, it can be a bit tricky to add in. A tip: mount shelving units on unused wall areas and inside cabinet doors. You can also install a ceiling-mounted rack for hanging pots and large skillets, as well as small hooks on the backs of closet doors for cleaning supplies, aprons, and other kitchen supplies. Another trick: install cabinets that reach the ceiling so you can take advantage of the additional space. You’ll be happy you did once you need to find a place for those one-time-a-year items.
