GPS and UAV jammer in military applications

UAV jammer is increasingly important in the future

Intrusion of a UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) or Drone can present a nuisance and potentially a real security threat at public events and secure facilities. If you need a method that’s even more subtle than physical interception, then frequency jamming may be what you need, and the Anti-UAV Defense System (AUDS) is one such solution. It scans the skies for drones and jams their control signals using its own high-powered radio signal.

It doesn’t appear that the drone was hit by a projectile or laser in its descent (though evidence of such would certainly change this analysis). Barring a physical projectile, the known non-kinetic methods for stopping a drone are threefold: radio frequency (RF) jamming, global navigation satellite system (GNSS) jamming, and spoofing. With RF jamming, the link between the drone and its operator is severed, usually causing the drone to descend or return to home. With GNSS, the drone’s link to satellite navigation is lost, and the drone then usually hovers in place, lands, or returns home. With spoofing, the attacker feeds the drone new information to take control of its flight.

None of these methods require any bright flashing lights, which could easily be a cosmetic feature of the counter-drone system. Given the drone’s sudden spiraling descent in the released video, it’s likeliest that the system featured is a radio-frequency wifi jammer. It is also likely, given the system’s employment on the side of the Russian-backed separatists, that the system is another Russian-made electronic warfare weapon, fielded on the front lines of a proxy war as much for battlefield impact as it is for research and test purposes.

The C5 Consortia, formed in 2014, and the most popular of the 25 consortia tracked by BGOV, is designed to address C4ISR and cyber technology requirements. BGOV’s C5 opportunity search shows 102 opportunities through C5. In order to respond to the drone jammer or other C5 opportunities a company must join the consortia which currently has hundreds of members including BGOV.

The U.S. Army wants drone-mounted signal jammer now to dominate future electronic warfare and is switching to a little-understood and lightly regulated contracting method to get them. GPS jammers are usually small devices that plug into a vehicle’s lighter port and emit radio signals that overpower or drown out much weaker signals such as GPS or others.

GPS jammer is important for electronic warfare

In timing applications, jammers can disrupt the GPS signal, causing the underlying systems to lose their ability to synchronize their internal clocks and, in turn, their ability to stay in sync with the rest of the network. Since many critical infrastructures sectors require synchronization across their network to be within millionths of a second, even short-term GPS outages can have a major impact. Worse, when an outage occurs, there’s typically nothing to indicate that it’s a result of jamming. The GPS signal simply is not received anymore.
