Corneal Specialist - Why You Might Need to See One

The cornea is a highly organized group of cells and proteins that make up the clear part of the front of the eye. It is the clear, dome-shaped surface that is situated over the front of the eye, the iris, pupil and anterior chamber المياه البيضاء. The cornea does not contain blood vessels to feed or protect it from infection. There are many diseases which may affect the cornea and many of them can lead to vision loss. A corneal specialist is an ophthalmologist who specializes in diseases of the cornea such as keratoconus corneal dystrophies and infections, as well as other diseases affecting the front parts of the eye, sometimes including the eyelids. They are highly skilled in leading advances in corneal disease and disorder treatments.

A corneal specialist will perform cornea transplants, and other surgeries on the front of the eye. Patients who have complicated problems or need complicated surgery affecting the fronts of the eye are referred a corneal specialist. Some diseases and disorders of the cornea requiring a specialist are Keratoconus, Fuchs' Dystrophy and corneal transplants. Fortunately, many of these diseases are treatable and often only a fellowship-trained specialist can treat these conditions.

Keratoconus is a corneal disorder that is hereditary and causes the cornea to thin and form a conical shape leading to distorted vision or vision loss القرنية المخروطية. This disorder is most often exhibited in teenagers and adults in their 20s. At first the corneal specialist will attempt vision correction with eyeglasses. However, as the astigmatism worsens and vision degrades, surgical treatment may be required to reshape the cornea. Fuchs' Dystrophy is a slow evolving disorder that is more seen in women than men. Fuchs' dystrophy happens when endothelial cells deteriorate gradually causing fluid to build up in the cornea. This causes the cornea to swell and distort vision which can eventually lead to blindness. A corneal transplant could eventually be needed if other corrective methods have been unsuccessful.

In a corneal transplant, part of a damaged or diseased cornea is replaced with a portion of a healthy cornea from a donor. A highly skilled corneal specialist is needed to perform this sensitive procedure. When a patient has cloudy, scarred, thin or inflamed corneas light is not able to enter the eye to get to the retina. This may result in decreased vision or blindness. A corneal transplant improves the look of the cornea while reducing pain and restoring vision. Many people have had their vision restored through corneal transplant surgery.
