However, back at that time, this concept was considered to be revolutionary. There are several good reasons for that.

  • However, there were still some issues found in this approach. The results did not seem to reflect the immediate potential of the internet and the computers to meet the specific needs of each user especially when the content is changed dynamically.

HTTP and HTML basics

  • One such add-on is the HTTP which is a communication standard that primarily governs the requests as well as the responses to these requests that take place between the web server and the browser running the computer of the end-user.
  • The job of the server is to accept the request made by a client and try to reply to it in the most meaningful way possible. This is usually done by attending the requested web page. This is why the term ‘server’ is used.

Ideally, the client is the natural counterpart to a server and therefore this term has a dual application as far as the web browser and the computer on which it is run on.

There can be several other devices used between the server and the client such as:

  • Routers
  • Gateways
  • Proxies and many more.

All these devices serve different roles and ensure that the requests and responses are transferred correctly between the server and the client. Typically, the Internet plays the most significant role to send such information.

The request and response procedure

Typically, this process allows the webserver to handle multiple connections simultaneously and when it is not communicating with the client it spends the time listening to an incoming connection. As and when one arrives, the server immediately sends back a response to confirm that it has received the request.

When you consider the most basic level, this request and response process entails a web browser that asks the webserver to send back a web page to it. The server, in turn, responds to this request and sends back the desired page which is then displayed by the browser.

The browser takes care of the following sequence of request and response:

  • The user enters http://server.com into the address bar of the browser
  • The browser looks up at the server.com for the IP address
  • The browser then issues a request for the home page to server.com
  • This request crosses the internet and arrives at the webserver of the server.com
  • The web server receiving the request looks in its hard disk for the web page
  • The server retrieves the web page and returns it to the browser and
  • The browser displays the web page.

All this makes the web page more dynamic for each object within it whether it is a graphic, a Flash file, an embedded video, and even a CSS template.
