The Types Of Computer Screening Systems

The use of computer systems in human psychological evaluation has seen a steady rise.

During this time, computers have assisted in administering and scoring tests aswell as in providing interpretive reports. The use of computers in the medical fieldbegan when large time-sharing computers were used to opticallyscan,  score, and profilefindings. The importance of computer based mental screening test is huge. This wasfollowed by the addition of interpretive narrative reports tothese systems.  More recently, computer-based mental screening test has changed the way mental screening was performed. This article sheds some light on the types of computer-based screening systems in use.

Optical Scanners

Optical sensors are one of the oldest computer testing systems used in psychology. In this system, light technology isused to detectcarbon pencil marks at specific coordinates on special answersheets.  These carbon pencil marks are then translated to datacodes (via a dossier language program) and the data is thenstored on an output medium (e.g., hard disk, tape). All furtherdata manipulations are usually performed by applicationprograms (software).

 Stand-Alone  Microcomputer  Testing  Systems

These types of systems are self-contained,  computerized psychological testing systems that usually administer tests, score tests, and provide complete printed evaluations (reports).  In addition to DEC and  [BM equipment, the personal-computer product line includes a wide range of name brandhardware such as Apple,  COMPAQ,  and  KayPro, to name afew. Currently, testing software packages (programs) are available for these types of hardware.  Besides, their application is assessing human psychology, the  microcomputer testing systemsare also widely used in other medical fields as well.

 Multiuser  Minicomputer  Systems

In this type ofsystem,  amedium-range minicomputer-based system with multi-user and multitasking capabilities is used.A  multiuser minicomputer system can become a small networking system by allowing remote users to use telecommunication channels to obtain access to the minicomputer.
