Who should do Everest Base Camp Trek with Gokyo Ri and who shouldn’t?

The Everest Base Camp Trek remains the most popular trekking trail in the Himalayan region with people from across the globe flooding Nepal with the trek on their bucket list. But the Everest Base Camp Trek with Gokyo Ri is where the real reward and adventure is! The trail does not just encompass incredible beauty but also offers much better and imposing views of the Everest than from anywhere else.

But the Everest Base Camp Trek with Gokyo Ri is also one of the most challenging treks one can take in the region. The Gokyo Ri Trek cannot be taken by anyone and everyone as it takes the trekkers to the highest hill in the region, the Gokyo Ri.

Gokyo Ri Trek - Who can take it?

The Gokyo Lake Trek is a moderately difficult one that requires trekkers who are experienced and have at least some level of physical fitness to their credit. It is not the trekking trail that is difficult or rough but the fact that a trekker needs to trek for five to six hours daily makes it a challenging task. The trek can be an easy one if the trekkers are used to undertaking higher elevations or walking for several hours a day.

In an ideal situation, an individual who wants to take up the Gokyo Lake Trek must start taking his or her physical fitness seriously and start exercising at least two months in advance. The trekkers should pay special attention to exercises that work for heart and lungs and building stamina.

The trek becomes more enjoyable and memorable if the trekkers walk down the entire trail, relaxed without stressing themselves about reaching the Everest Base Camp.

All said and done, the trek still does not require any technical expertise and can be undertaken by anyone who is dedicated to physical fitness and is capable of undertaking day-long treks.

Gokyo Ri Trek—Who should avoid?

The trek can be a challenging task for the beginner trekkers who are probably not used to trekking for long hours every day. The trek does not just require a healthy and physically fit body but also a motivated mind and soul.

Acute Mountain Sickness or AMS is for real while on Gokyo Ri Trek and so the trekkers who have a history of AMS or who are affected by thin levels of oxygen must avoid undertaking the Trek.

People who have knee injuries, heart issues or breathing troubles should strictly abstain from trekking the Gokyo Ri Trek that requires long hours of trekking at elevated levels.

Things to remember

There have been several instances where the trekkers had to return from mid-way due to severe conditions and symptoms that can get fatal, if ignored.

While on the Gokyo Lake Trek, remember a few things that can be a savior. Remember to take it slowly and steadily if you wish to go far. Travelling 1000 feet every day is a good deal; staying hydrated is the easiest and the simplest way to keep AMS issues at bay; remember to intake plenty of carbohydrates that will keep you energized at higher altitudes. It is a good idea to pack healthy packs including energy bars. Refrain from self-medication and stop immediately at any symptoms of AMS that include loss of appetite, insomnia, diarrhea, and nausea. Such symptoms can become fatal in no time and must be treated almost immediately!

Remember that the success of the Everest Base Camp Trek with Gokyo Ri depends as much on the strategy and motivation as on the levels of physical fitness of an individual.
