Four Fox Film Franchises to Be Rebooted by Disney Plus

Recently Disney announced that its new streaming service will be hitting the market. The streaming services will be available from December 11 onwards in the US. It is a significant attempt by Disney, which may result in stirring up the streaming competition. Now the upcoming streaming service has announced to reboot four of the Fox movie franchises.

Fox revealed it back in 2017 that its movie and shows division might be up for sale. A number of companies showed interest in gaining the studio and its assets. The decision came down to Disney and Comcast in the end. It was Disney who got the deal done with Fox with Disney paying a whopping amount of 71 billion dollars.

It took Disney just over a year to gain control over the assets and services that it purchased. Even Marvel has got the rights over Fantastic Four and X-Men, but they would not be working on it until the early phase 4 of the MCU. Fox already decided to bring installments of movies like Kingsman and Avatar; however, several other franchises are left hanging as of now. It brings hope for some of them as Disney announced to reboot four of the Fox movie franchise.

Disney recently suffered third quarter of a loss so acquiring these franchises may prove to be in its fair. The four franchises that are going to be rebooted on the upcoming Disney plus are:

  1. Home Alone (1990)
  2. Night at the Museum (2006)
  3. Cheaper by the Dozen (2003)
  4. Diary of a Wimpy Kid (2010)

As for these movies, the Home Alone installments started in the 1990s with the movies earning over 700 million dollars worldwide. Only the second installment of the franchise hit the theater though as the other two went directly to home video.

Steve Martin leading Cheaper by the Dozen franchise starting in 2003, earned more than 300 million dollars worldwide.

Ben Stiller’s The Night at The Museum trilogy earned the most out of the group, racking up 1.3 billion dollars from 2006 to 2014.

The Diary of a Wimpy Kid trilogy did not do much high earning. It was approximately 70 million dollars each. The reboot of the series in 2017 was not received well by the fans and it only earned 40 million dollars worldwide.

Each one of the franchise has brought in different numbers for Fox studios, but Disney’s appeal to reboot them is easily understandable. All of the franchises chosen can easily be fit under the Disney banner. However different from the standard Disney reboots, these ones will directly go to streaming, much like Disney’s Lady and the Tramp movie.

Disney Plus is set to have a large number of viewers, but how much will these four franchises add to the numbers still remains to be seen. Disney will be eager to fix that quarter third loss they just endured.
