Hydration To Heal Acne | Clear Skin Routine | Clear Skin Tips

Winter is upon us, and often that means dry and dehydrated skin.  And even though finding great skincare products to protect the moisture barrier is important, properly hydrating your body from the inside out is even more important.  The results are real and lasting – and extend far beyond the skin.

In the skincare world there is a lot of discussion about hydrating the skin.  Women are spending a fortune on serums, oils and masks designed to deliver a plump, hydrated complexion.  Topical products seem to be the ultimate answer to maximum skin hydration.  This is not true.

The ultimate answer to maximum hydration is to hydrate the skin from the inside out.  And it is very rare to see someone do it correctly.

For example, did you know that you can be dehydrated even if you drink 2L of water every day?

Yup.  If your mineral balance is off, chances are the water you drink gets eliminated almost immediately without going where it really needs to go – the cells of your body.  Your cells remain dehydrated and filled with toxins.

No matter what else you do, if you are not well hydrated you are not detoxifying.  And that leads to poor health – and a poor complexion (regardless what serums you are applying).

Proper hydration is not simply infusing your body with water – you need to get the water inside your cells, where 66-70% of the body’s water resides.  Most of the toxins in our body are stored in our cells and it is critical to hydrate them so that we can efficiently detoxify our body.  Bottom line: if we are dehydated our bodies will not be able to detoxify.

This is so important that being well-hydrated on a cellular level slows down and even reverses biological aging.  Proper hydration will also lead to clear skin, more energy, and better health in every system of the body.

So how do you get water into the body’s cells?  You need to improve the electrical charges across your cellular membranes.  This allows the pores of the cells to open up so water can get into the cells.  The strategies to make this happen include:

1.  Ensure you are consuming adequate electrolytes daily. NaCl (salt), potassium and magnesium are the main electrolytes essential for regulating the electrical charges accross the cell membrane so that water can move freely in and out of the cell.   It is interesting to note that  50% population deficient in Mg, which means that most people are dehydrated.  Some strategies to boost your electrolytes:

  • eat tons of green vegetables
  • drink 1L of water with half a squeezed lemon and a pinch of sea salt each morning
  • have an espom salt bath a few times a week (add 2-3 cups of salts per bath)

2.  Take trace minerals daily.  (Trace minerals include iron, zinc, fluoride, iodine, copper, selenium, etc.) . These minerals help the body perform billions of electrical impulses throughout the body – if deficient most our systems will not be able to perform optimally.  Trace minerals also allow water to flow in between intracellular and extracellular matrix. I suggest adding mineral drops to your daily water.  I like ConcenTrace Mineral Drops (20 drops per day).

3.  Drink approximately 2L of filtered water each day.  I like Aquagear and Santevia water filters.  Drink even more water if you drink alcohol or caffeinated beverages.

4.  Increase fibre through fruit and vegetable consumption.

5.  Reduce EMF exposure.  Electrial impulses regulate the movement of water in and out of the cells and when we are continually exposed to EMF the gap junctions between our cells become damaged and water is not able to move freely in and out of cells.  Take small steps – sleep with phone in another room.

So start hydrating your body properly today and you will see a big change in your skin health this winter.  Most importantly your body will be able to detox properly, which means your skin will be clear and glowing – and you will feel amazing!
