Stability has been deemed essential to both natural and fabricated slopes. It would be inclusive of road cuts, railway and road embankments, and more. It would be pertinent to mention here that the stability of these slopes has become a point of concern to the geotechnical engineers. The slopes have become vulnerable and causing the worst of problems. Therefore, there has been an imminent need for analyzing and designing the slopes prudently.

Using the 2D Slope Stability Methods

The 2D Slope Stability methods have become common in usage due to their simplicity. You would come across Limit Equilibrium Method (LEM) used for calculating the prediction of the stability of the slope. These have been popular methods in usage due to their simplicity, along with reduced parameters required by them. They would need a few parameters inclusive of slope topography, geometry, dynamic and static loads, hydrogeologic conditions, and geotechnical parameters.

You could also make use of deterministic methods inclusive of Finite Element Method (FEM), Strength Reduction Method (SRM), Finite Difference Method (FDM), limit analysis, Gravity Increase Method (GIM), and more. These methods have gained immense popularity in the advanced digital arena. It would not be wrong to suggest that the methods mentioned above would design the slopes in real-time. They would have a better option to predict the deformations of soil as well.

The Purpose of Using 2D Slope Stability Methods

The primary purpose of using the deterministic method of slope stability analysis would be to determine the critical slip surface location. It would be used to finding the FOS against the failure. If the FOS is determined relatively huge, the slope is deemed safe. However, for the FOS being equal to 1.0 or less, the slope is deemed unsafe.

You should rest assured that these deterministic methods have failed to explain the various kinds of uncertainties present in the slope of the soil. Consequently, there has been a growth of these methods for their ability to explain the presence of uncertainties present in the slope of the soil.

Need For Slope Stability Analysis

If you wonder about the need of performing slope stability analysis, you should understand that the analysis would be essential for assessing a safe design of fabricated or natural slopes along with the equilibrium conditions. Slope stability has been a vital resistance of the inclined surface to defy failure to collapse or slide. Without slope stability analysis, the establishment or building would not be deemed safe for habitation or usage.
