Benefits of Evergreen Boundry Fences

The Benefits of Evergreen Boundary Fences

I'm sitting on my patio, enjoying a glass of lemonade and wondering, what are the benefits of evergreen fences?

Evergreen fences place space between you and your neighbor’s home creating a boundary. Evergreen fences also shield your home from noise, wind, and pollution. Are you concerned about wildlife? Evergreen fences are homes to birds, insects, and most small mammals. If you're thinking about planting an evergreen fence, remember that they're less expensive than most hardscape fences.

The Private Life

Traditional wooden, metal, and vinyl fences provide minimum privacy, but evergreen fences offer the maximum amount. Local ordinances have height restrictions on backyard fence construction. Usually, fence structures can only be 6-8 feet tall. Most mature evergreen trees will grow beyond 8 feet, giving you complete privacy in an outdoor setting. As long as your evergreen plants won't obstruct powerlines, you'll be all set to go.

Living In A Bubble

Imagine living in a world free from outside elements and distractions. If your home is close to a highway, factory, or busy road, evergreen fences alleviate noise and pollution. A research study was done at the University of California in Davis. Studies show that evergreen trees act as a filter from harmful pollutants. Also, evergreen trees act as a buffer to noises. The tree trunk is like a shield deflecting sounds while the twigs and leaves absorb other noises.

Wind damage can cause extensive damage to your home. Choosing to plant an evergreen fence can save you tons of money. Evergreen fences produce windbreaks to prevent such damage. Evergreen fences may even lower your energy bill.

A Living Fence

Evergreen trees got their names because they provided your home with greenery all year. They'll provide a safe home for animals during the winter. Unlike deciduous trees, evergreen trees never shed their leaves. Evergreen trees grow at a rapid pace. These trees add close to 3 feet in height annually. Some evergreens reach a mature height of 80 feet with a width of 40 feet. Some evergreen trees used for landscaping are:

How To Plant Your Evergreen Hedge

  1. Pick which hedge you want to use.

Hedges can be bought at any home and garden store. Pick between Yew, Laurel, Photinia, or Privets to find a good hedge.

  1. Place the hedges where you want them to grow.

In this step after placement and planting, protect your trees from the wind with a wind-breaking net.

  1. Prep your soil.

Make sure you remove any unwanted debris from the soil. This includes sticks, rocks, and weeds. Using a fork, mix manure, and the soil into each other to create the base for planting.

  1. Make two stakes and tie string around them.

First, stake out your trench. Once you're satisfied, start to dig using your string as a lead. The trench should lodge your plants. Dig holes slightly deeper than the balls of the root. To help the roots grow outward, use your fork to break up the soil. This will also help rain to get into the soil.

  1. Start planting.

Remove the plant from its packaging or pot, and tease the roots outwardly. Place the roots below the soil. Make sure the stem is not planted to prevent rot. Once the plant is leveled, place the soil back on top and firm it up.

  1. Water your hedges.

Continuously water your evergreen trees during the warmer seasons. Excessive watering can cause water-logging. Be mindful not to water them too much, but also don't let them dry out.

  1. Watch them grow.

Now that you've done the work, it's time to let nature take its course!
