Working of Charpy Impact Test and Its Application

One way of knowing the strength of materials used in building and construction industries is to determine the amount of shock they can absorb. The Charpy Impact Test consumes the amount of impact a material can absorb before it fractures. The impact test uses the Charpy impact tester, which includes a pendulum (of known mass and height) to determine the notch hardness.

Use and Working of the Charpy Impact Tester

For a Charpy Impact Tester, a notch with known dimensions is used, which is vital as measurements can vary with dimensions. The pendulum of the Charpy Impact Tester is dropped from a specified height to impact the notch material. The kinetic energy of the pendulum striker before and after the impact will be measured to determine the energy absorbed by the material. The tester has an LCD screen to display the energy absorbed by the material automatically after the test and provide reading, measurements, and output on the display.

Real-World Applications of the Charpy Impact Test

The Charpy Impact Test is used in a wide variety of industries because of the beneficial characteristic and quality of a material it measures.

Forging industry- The Charpy test is used in the metal (including steel) forging industry to determine the ductility and malleability strength and quality of materials that are being forged to form parts and components.

Rubber industry- It may also be important to know the shock-absorbing capacity of rubber in many industries and the Charpy Impact Test is used for the same purpose here as well.

Plastic industry - The fracture and breaking point of plastic can also be deduced through the Charpy Impact Test. This may help in manufacturing suitable products with the given strength and impact resistance for the materials they hold and the circumstances and scenarios where they can be useful.

The application of Charpy Impact Test is crucial to identify whether the material being tested is suitable for a particular kind of product or not. The different materials, including forged parts, plastic bottles, and products made using rubber, are exposed to various impacts during their packaging and usage. Charpy Impact Test may help towards determining the right density, size, and dimensions of the material and whether the material is a suitable choice for producing a particular product.
