Why are Some Mac App Icons Crossed Out?

Any applications you download on your Mac keeps piling up on the Dock. Apps appear in the form of an icon, which leads you to the main window of the site. Have you ever noticed an icon with a crossed-out symbol on them? It specifies that your Mac cannot run the application.

There are a lot of reasons behind these applications not opening, One of which is likely to be the updating process. When you update your Mac, it might no longer support these 32-bit apps anymore. Else, the reason could be your disapprovals to use the app, damaged app, etc. In such cases, it is essential to make sure that you have a recent version of the application. Try updating the app and check if it still appears the same.

Talking about macOS 10.15 Catalina, it doesn’t support 32-bit applications anymore. Thus, if you have the same on your Mac, you’ll see the crossed-out icon. Whenever you try opening the app, a notification will flash warning you about updating the app. It is loud and clear that you won’t be able to use these applications on your recent macOS. However, you can deal with the same by following some of the tips mentioned below.

Look for a 64-bit Application

If there is a 32-bit application that you use very often, you might want to look for its 64-bit version. Visit the official developer’s website to check the same. If you’re fortunate enough, you’ll find one. Else, you can also check a newer version on the Mac Store.

Look for an Alternative Application

There’s nothing much you can do about the application that’ll no longer run on your Mac. Thus, you can always look for its alternative on the Mac Store.

Use an Older Mac

If you have an older Mac that runs 32-bit apps, you can try using these apps on the same. However, doing so holds some security risks.

Downgrade to macOS 10.14 Mojave

In case you can’t rely on any apps other than your regular 32-bit applications, you may reinstall the older version of macOS for instance, Mojave. It is advised to create a backup for your system before reinstalling the version. Newer apps give rise to newer technology and techniques. Thus, it is important to leave behind the old tech to get a hold of the new one. Still, if you cannot get your work done other than the apps you use, you can follow any of the advice mentioned above.
