Christmas Decoration Fire in Stalybridge, Manchester is a Timely Reminder to Keep Fire Safety a Priority

A Fire is believed to have started after a candle set fire to Christmas decorations in a house in Stalybridge, Manchester. Fortunately, nobody was hurt in the incident, but Great Manchester Fire and Rescue Service is urging people to take extra care when decorating their homes for the festive season.

With more time spent at home due to the Covid-19 restrictions and the temptation to put the Christmas decorations up early for some respite from the Corona gloom, the potential risk from fire is therefore greater.

Just few things to check, particularly if you live in a residential block of flats!

  • Avoid putting fairy lights on a balcony as they could become an ignition source along with any BBQs, fire pits or patio heaters.
  • Check all Christmas lights for any signs of frayed wiring or signs of over heating
  • Never put a candle near any Christmas decorations or any type of combustible material
  • Do not overload sockets or extension leads and never plug one extension lead into another

You should have a night-time procedure in place, especially at this time, a few suggestions for you to consider

  • Ensure all inside doors are closed to prevent any smoke or fire spreading
  • Turn as many appliances and lights off as possible
  • Check that your cooker is switched off and has no combustibles on the hob
  • Turn any electrical convector heaters off
  • Make sure any candles and cigarettes have been extinguished properly
  • Keep your escape route clear and make sure your household knows ‘The Plan’

What is ‘The Plan’?  It should be your Fire Safety Emergency Plan!

You should have one for your household, but if you live in a block of flats or converted house into flats, a Fire Safety Emergency Plan should be included in the buildings Fire Safety Risk Assessment.
