Venous Insufficiency — Unraveling the Facts

Think of your arteries and veins as expansive highways that direct blood to and from your heart. Now imagine a huge traffic jam caused by a pileup of blood in your legs and foot. Not too pleasant of sight, is it? But that’s what venous insufficiency is — a condition involving the pooling of blood in the legs due to blood being unable to return to the heart. At X-Ray Associates of New Mexico, our radiologists know the dangers of venous diseases all too well. That’s why we aim to prevent, diagnose, and treat venous insufficiency at our XRANM locations in the Sante Fe and Albuquerque areas.

The Telltale Signs

The warning signs are usually present in the form of leg and foot pain and discomfort. Most people write it off as a symptom of natural aging. But this line of thinking can get you into trouble further down the road.

Because of this, it’s best to keep an eye out for these symptoms:

  • Varicose veins
  • Leg cramps
  • Leg and ankle swelling
  • Sores and open wounds on your legs
  • Tightness in your calves
  • Noticeable pain when standing up but not when raising your legs
  • A feeling of heaviness in your legs
  • Thicker skin around your legs and ankles
  • Discoloration, especially around your ankles

Now that we know the symptoms of venous insufficiency, let’s take a closer look at its two leading causes.

The Two Main Culprits

The usual suspects behind venous insufficiency are blood clots and varicose veins. This pair of no-goodniks are key figures in disrupting normal blood flow. In the case of blood clots, forward blood flow is halted — resulting in a build-up of blood below the clot. On the other hand, varicose veins are engorged veins housing non-existent or damaged valves. These maligned valves often leak and cause blood to congregate in a particular area, thereby stopping its movement.

The following factors also contribute to venous insufficiency:

  • Obesity
  • Inactivity
  • Smoking
  • Cancer
  • Pregnancy
  • Muscle weakness
  • Prior leg injuries
  • A family history of venous insufficiency

It’s important to note that women are more prone to experience this condition than men. There’s also an increased risk of developing venous insufficiency after the age of 50.
