How to Create a Prayer Space in Your Home

Some bow to Meccas 5 times a day, while others attend Sunday mass. Similarly, some ring the bells in the temples of Ganesh while others visit their synagogues to say their prayers. Whatever your method, it is a fact that prayer is a common ritual in most religions of the world.

In most religions, setting up a prayer space inside the home is considered auspicious. Muslims pray five times a day, and therefore, they cannot attend the mosque every time. Hence, a prayer space in the home is handy. Similarly, Hindus consider it a blessing to start their day by praying to their Gods. Most Hindus set up a prayer spot inside their abode so they can pray regularly.

In the same way, Buddhists and members of other faiths set up a secluded and serene space in their home to meditate and take stock daily. A prayer space is a good idea, as it is a chance for you to refill yourself spiritually, and so it's best done in a space that is free of distractions.

Most people find it challenging, but do you know that creating a prayer space is not at all difficult? You do not need a big room or a mansion, or a big budget. All you would need is your creativity and time.

Here are a few simple tips to help you set up a beautiful prayer space that brings you peace:

1.     Select the Space for a Prayer Room

Select the space in your home where you think there would be the least disturbance. Take stock of your home and think which place would be most suitable for a prayer nook. You can choose a room that is isolated from the rest of the house, the basement or attic of your house or even the corner of your room can be better options. Take care that the room is away from the noise of the TV as well as the general hustle-bustle of a home.

2.     Make the Prayer Space Presentable

Now that you have decided where your prayer space would be, next, you have to focus on its presentation. The décor of your prayer space is not meant to impress others but to help you achieve your prayer goals.

Hence, first, identify why you offer prayer? Do you pray to feel connected to God, or do you pray to find tranquility and peace? The Décor of your prayer room can help you achieve your goals in a better way. For example, if you are seeking tranquility, you can choose soft pastels and soothing lights to accentuate the room.

On the other hand, if you are doing it to feel closer to God, you can decorate the room with religious memorabilia. The décor of a prayer corner does not mean that you clutter it too much, keep it minimal, but arrange it well.  Too much décor can divert your attention.

Remember, the cleanliness and organization of your prayer space are important. Therefore make sure that it's clean and tidy at all times. Do not underestimate the importance of fragrance in your prayer area. Jasmine, Lavender, and honeysuckle are wonderful options to relax your mood and let your focus on your worship. That's the reason that for centuries aroma has held an important place in religious places in every religion.

3.     Collect the Required Items

The third and final step is to collect the things that are required to perform your prayers. Different religions have different items required ranging from the Holy books prayer books to censers, framed pictures, crucifixes, statues, holy water, relics, rosaries, oil burners, baskets and bowls for offerings, candles,  and other religious things that can make your prayers more powerful.

Muslims need a prayer mat and Tasbeeh for worship. You can also keep different kinds of religious books in your prayer space. Set a shelf in the corner to keep them organized, and you can easily get them when needed. Technology can also help you here; you may use Muslim Pro App that tell prayer times and have a compilation of duas.

On the other hand, if you practice the Hindu religion, you can set up a beautiful space for the statue of your preferred deity, a beautifully carved bell, and a gold or bronze thaali for food. Similarly, Christians may hang up a delicate cross; white or bronze looks especially good, but wood has a rustic appeal to it too.

You can also keep some large and comfortable cushions to give you a more relaxing place for worship if you intend to sit on the floor. Otherwise, you can keep a set of comfortable sofa or kneeler for your convenience.

A little bit of munching is allowed while worshiping, especially in the middle of the night or early morning. Therefore, keep healthy snacks like granola bars, dates, and dry fruits in beautiful acrylic or glass jars on the table.

Additionally, your prayer space needs a water bottle so that there is no excuse of leaving again and again. This would otherwise distract your focus. Hence, keep a water bottle with fresh tumblers in the prayer room as well.

Final Thoughts

Your prayer space should be free from any kind of distraction so that you can maximize your attention on your meditation and prayers. It could be any corner of your home or even a room- where you believe there would be zero disturbances.

You do not need a high budget to create a prayer room; all you need is time and dedication, along with a little love. Pastel colors, minimal décor, comfy furniture, and tastefully chosen religious memorabilia of your choice are all you need to get your prayer space going.
