How do we deal with behavioral changes in seniors?

It can be challenging to deal with behavioral changes in seniors, and it requires a lot of attention and thoughtfulness. The key is to remember that individual behavior is rarely personal, and dramatic changes from happiness to anger are very unlikely to be your mistakes.

You can follow these tips to deal with personality changes in an elderly person:

  • Encourage seniors who show signs of apathy to do something interesting or enjoyable. Find out what they enjoy.

  • Seniors suffering from anxiety or compulsive anxiety-related behaviors need a calm and safe environment. Make sure their surroundings are calm and well-organized.

  • You can maintain constant mindfulness of the senior's actions by expressing greetings when they act and speak correctly and explaining your feelings when they behave atypically.

  • Make sure that you and your seniors are both safe if they demonstrate aggressive behavior. Please call for help if necessary.

  • Behavior can change suddenly due to pain, infection, or reactions to a medication. This may not constitute dementia. Before concluding, evaluation by the doctor is recommended.

  • Medicine is not always the answer to this problem. One study indicates that inappropriate medicine can cause negative reactions and make things worse. Be advised.

  • Understand the root of the problem. Was there an event that triggered the problem or an event that occurred after it?

  • While their behavior is irritating and frustrating, you also need to be patient and calm. This implies taking breaks.

  • Talk to the elder patient’s caregiver and doctor about the support that may be helpful in assisting them in adjusting to changes in their behavior.

  • You should monitor your seniors closely. Timely check on them if they are in pain, thirst, hunger, full bladder, constipation, skin irritation, infections, and fatigue. Maintain a room temperature.
