HOW DOES THERMOFORMING WORKS?

Thermoforming is an affordable technology that helps you create packaging, trays, panels, and housings. They are durable, inexpensive, and quick to produce. The parts thermoformed are rigid or flexible, opaque or translucent. They come in a variety of materials with different mechanical, thermal, and chemical properties.

Thermoforming has some limitations. They cannot achieve fine detail of molding and 3D printing. Thermoforming is a low startup cost, and it could make a good solution for small-to-medium-sized businesses. It is essential to follow the guidelines to create thermoformed parts. It’ll help you create accurate and durable parts that have prolonging life.

HOW THERMOFORMING WORKS?

The hot sheet of thermoplastic is drawn onto a mold. Each drawing uses a single sheet. After that, the sheets are formed into multiple parts. One of the best ways to decrease the cost of the thermoformed products is to increase the number of parts created per draw.

When the hot thermoplastic is put on the mold, we have to use the vacuum to draw any air out of it and produce a perfect mold. This vacuuming process is called vacuum forming. When the part is cooled, the excess plastic is removed with the help of trimming.

Before starting the process of thermoforming, manufactures will need molds for it. They can be 3D printed, cast, or machined. The final product may be transparent or translucent. The mold will be needing some finishing like polishing and sanding. The lifetime of the mold can be hundreds of years.
