Florida Window Tinting Laws - What's Hot and What's Not?

Among other states, Florida Window Tinting laws are more lenient when it comes to window tint darkness percentage or the Visible Light Transmission (VLT). This percentage refers to the amount of light that can pass through the film and into your car which means that a lower VLT is darker compared to that of a higher VLT percent.

If the law is not followed, it could potentially be cited for a tinting violation, and depending on how many windows are being cited, it could add up to a hefty fine!

That is why if you’re looking to get your car windows tinted, be sure that you are in compliance with all applicable laws and statutes in Florida.

Here are the legal tint limit for passenger vehicles:

Front Windshield - Only use non-reflective tint above the manufacturer’s AS-1 line.
Front-seat side windows - You can use up to 28% tint darkness
Back seat side windows - You can use up to 15% tint darkness
Rear window - You can use up to 15% tint darkness

Here are the legal tint limit for multi-purpose vehicles:

Front Windshield - Only use non-reflective tint on the top 4 inches of the windshield.
Front-seat side windows - You can use up to 88% tint darkness with aftermarket film and up to 70% tint darkness if combined with factory-tinted windows.
Back seat side windows - You can use any tint darkness
Rear window - You can use any tint darkness

However, there are exclusions to the rules against full covering of side and back windows. If you are a car owner with documented medical conditions that must avoid excess heat or sunlight like skin cancer, lupus, or other solar sensitivities, then you are exempted from the Florida window tinting laws but you must be able to produce proof of this medical condition in the form of a signed certificate and waiver from the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles.
