Roles of an NGO in India

Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs), as the name suggests, are non-profit organisations that independently carry out various projects for the benefit of the underprivileged people and society at large.

India currently has about 3.4 million NGOs working in various projects ranging from disaster relief, child rights to women empowerment and animal rights.

There are experts with years of experience who work towards executing social welfare activities with various campaigns. Before rolling out a project, NGOs do a detailed analysis of the situation to drum up with possible solutions. The NGOs although, are not financed by the government, but the civic and other government agencies collaborate with them to carry out different projects.

Different NGOs are constantly working on multiple projects for developing India, for example, JP Medaid. Being the best NGO in West Bengal, we are relentlessly working towards achieving equal human rights and providing healthy living conditions to the unprivileged masses of society. We have provided our services in numerous parts of West Bengal like Sathjaliya in Sunderban, Horipal, Basirhat, and even the remote places in Orissa.

To give you detailed information about NGOs, we have fish out three important roles that NGOs in India perform.

1.     Bridging the Gap

Indian economy has made some progress in bringing out millions of people from poverty, increasing literacy and life expectancy, and providing better health services. But given the vastness of India in terms of demography, area, and socio-cultural diversity, millions are still deprived of their needs of health, shelter, education, and food. The benefits of economic progress are not uniform in nature.

NGOs play a crucial role in India. NGOs fill gaps in government projects and reach out to the people who are left untouched by state projects, like providing aid to migrant workers in the COVID-19 crisis.

2.     Acts as a Pressure Group

Some NGOs distribute nutritious food to malnourished children, provide clothes and shelter to unprivileged people. Then there are political NGOs that summon public opinions against Government policies.

Such NGOs educate and organise the unprivileged ones to stand against the government and demand for their basic human rights, quality service, and an improved socio-economic community. They make people aware of their human rights, educates them, and make them fight for their deserving.Such NGOs host campaigns in different areas and makes people aware of their rights.

3.     Acts as a Social Intermediary

In India, people still have superstitions, faith, and beliefs like gender discrimination, caste segregation, untouchability, and racial and religious discrimination. NGOs act as an intermediary among different levels of society to change such social and behavioural attitudes and superstitions within the social environment for bringing desired results of change in society.

Summing Up

To sum up, the work done by NGOs has a greater effect on building the economy and making it better. They have the potential to touch millions of more lives through their work, which the government fails to do.
