Preparing for the GRE

On average, it takes at least six months to thoroughly prepare for the GRE. You should start by familiarizing yourself with different types of problems, and then do a mock test. Based on its results, you will understand which sections need to be paid more attention.

Preparation materials and practice test

To prepare for the verbal part, you need to learn to understand the essence of the sentence as a whole, and not just learn the words. Very often my students say that they know all the words in a sentence, but cannot understand its meaning. In this case, it would be helpful to master the skills of the best essay writer. If you have such difficulties, you are not ready for the GRE at all. Therefore, read as many complex texts as possible in large volumes.

It is very important when you read, for example, any article in the New Yorker of 15-30 pages, not to read it superficially, but to understand each sentence until you are completely sure that you understood everything. For this kind of work, the lyrics by John McPhee, especially Fleet of One and Atchafalaya, are very well suited.

These same tips are also suitable for preparing for analytical writing. Check out the sample assignments on the GRE website and do as much as possible.

To cope with the math part, solve typical problems. Practice mental or paper counting to save time on the exam. On my own test, I used the calculator once in three math sections (60 problems). I might not have done this, but I saw that I had enough time and saved a little effort on some kind of calculation.
