Best Summer Drinks - Diabetes can have.

“Summer” What does this word remind you of?  Summer means hot, long days, hard-working days in hot and humid weather, also means holiday time, picnic time, relaxing time. This hot and humid weather leads to dehydration in the body.

What do we do then?

We need to rehydrate ourselves. Normally, people opt for milkshakes, cold drinks, fruit juices, etc. But if you are a diabetic, you are not supposed to indulge in them. These drinks contain very high direct sugars or milk which is not suitable for diabetics.

Then what drinks are best for diabetics? Does that mean that diabetics should only have plain water and nothing to rehydrate themselves? No, it is not so at all. There are many good choices they can make during summers.

Here is a list of summer drinks for diabetics -

  • Jaljeera is a very good choice for rehydration. Diabetics or health-conscious should have it unsweetened or can add stevia to it.
  • Another great option for cold drinks or milkshakes is Kokam (Aagal) (unsweetened) can add jeera + salt or rock salt + stevia.
  • Nothing can beat lemon water during summers. Not only it refreshes you but provides the required vitamin C also. You can add salt or rock salt + elaichi + stevia.
  • Healthy barley water for summers. To prepare it, you have to first heat the water and pearl barley in a saucepan and bring it to a boil. Add the salt and let it cook on a low flame for 30 minutes. You can muddle the grains a little, using a spoon. Strain it into a glass, tip in a lemon rind. Let it cool completely. You can also keep it in the refrigerator for 30 minutes and then have it. You can use ginger, cinnamon, cumin seeds, and other spices, or orange juice to enhance the taste. The leftover grains can be used to make cereals, salads, or a thickening agent for curries and smoothies. Don't waste it!
  • Raw mango and summers are the best combinations. Diabetics can prepare unsweetened Kairi panha and relish all its benefits. They can also add stevia + mint + elaichi to make it tastier.

Some more drinks:

In addition to the above, you can also have the following - Coconut water without malai, coriander, and jeera water with salt or rock salt and saunf, "Solkadhi" made from vegan buttermilk or coconut milk once a week, "Vegan Buttermilk" made from vegan curd (please refer to FFD manual for recipe), Jamun juice unsweetened, etc.

There are few important points to remember as well. Like neera and fruit juice is not recommended. You can have sabja or tulsi seeds in all the above drinks. You can add stevia to all the above drinks. And most importantly patients with heart and kidney problems or those on fluid restriction should take precautions. They need to follow their doctor's advice.
